Kings Q&A: Vlade Divac
Kings legend Vlade Divac talks about visiting Sacramento, new ownership and more.
What have you been up to since arriving in town?
“I’ve been very busy – they make me work, but it’s a pleasure. We are doing something special. It’s a good cause with UNICEF and the Kings. We’re trying to help kids around the world (gain access to clean drinking) water.”
How much do you enjoy visiting Sacramento?
“Every time I’m here, it’s emotional for me. It’s a lot of good memories coming back because the six years I spent here were the best of my career.”
Since arriving, you’ve had the opportunity to interact with Kings fans. How much do Kings fans mean to you?
“It’s great. Fans are very loyal to this organization, and I’m so glad the Kings were able to stay here because these people really love their team.”
What are some of your favorite memories from your time playing in Sacramento?
“We need more time, because these people – the fans – the Playoffs, the series against the Lakers… All those things are good memories.”
Kings Chairman and Majority Owner Vivek Ranadivé believes basketball is an agent for global change. Do you share his sentiment?
“I agree totally. I think the last six years since I retired, I see how much sports can bring people together, and basketball is definitely something international. Everybody plays and, as you see tonight, there’s a lot of international guys (who can) spread the word all around the world.”
If you could say something to Kings fans, what would it be?
“Be patient. You are in good hands, and good things are going to happen. I think the new group of people who came here are good people and they want to make things happen here.”
Kings Talk Vlade's Visit
DeMarcus Cousins: “It was a good thing (having Vlade in town). He’s one of the guys (whose number) hangs up in the rafters, he’s a legend in this city and everyone was glad he was in town.”
Ben McLemore: “It was great to see him. He’s one of the greatest Kings players and he has a lot of history here. We got to talk to him after practice and he told us about his experience here, how much he loved it and that he wants us to just keep playing and work hard each and every day.”
Derrick Williams: “He’s done a lot for our fanbase, for this city and for this organization. I think it’s good for all of us to see him. It was my first time meeting him, but you can tell by the reaction the crowd gave him that he’s a big part of this organization.”
Jason Thompson: “He’s a good guy. Last time I was around him was when he had his jersey retired and he was active with us at practice. He told us stories about what it was like back in the day, and it's always good for us to hear. He’s a legend — everything he did here speaks for itself.”
