Jazz Celebrate NBA Green Week on April 4
Green Game to Feature Jazz Green Team Activities, Eco-Friendly Fan Giveaways and Mobile Phone Donation Program
SALT LAKE CITY (April 3, 2014) – As part of NBA Green Week, the Utah Jazz will host a special Green Game on Friday, April 4 when the Jazz take on the New Orleans Pelicans at EnergySolutions Arena. The Green Game will feature a variety of green-themed activities and fan giveaways, including the distribution of 10,000 reusable tote bags. NBA Green Week, running April 3 -10, is an annual league-wide event that encourages fans to team up with the NBA family to take small steps to keep our planet healthy.
Throughout NBA Green Week, Jazz players will wear special NBA Green adidas shooting shirts made from 100 percent organic cotton and coaches will wear NBA Green lapel pins. In an ongoing effort to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection, the Jazz will also debut a Jazz Green Team spot encouraging fans to “Show Utah Some Love,” which will run within Jazz game broadcasts, in-arena and online.
A highlight of the Green Game on April 4 will be a pregame appearance by the Jazz Green Team on the EnergySolutions Arena plaza, featuring greening tips for fans and basketball shooting games with special prizes. The Jazz Green Team will also collect mobile phones to be recycled in partnership with Verizon’s HopeLine program. Fans who donate their old mobile phones will be entered into a drawing for two lower-bowl tickets to watch the Jazz take on the L.A. Lakers on April 14. HopeLine provides domestic violence organizations nationwide with refurbished mobile phones to give victims the ability to make emergency calls. Any donated phones that cannot be refurbished will be recycled responsibly under Verizon’s zero-landfill policy.
The Green Game will also help tip off the 2014 Jazz Green Team Tour, which is making stops throughout Utah this spring and summer. Powered by the Jazz Green Machine, a biodiesel fuel truck, the tour will bring fun, interactive and educational activities to thousands of Utah residents. With participation by Washakie Renewable Energy, Questar and Rocky Mountain Power, Jazz Green Team Tour stops will include Salt Lake Bees games, the Hogle Zoo, the Tour of Utah and more. The Utah Jazz is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and recently joined the Salt Lake Chamber’s Clean Air Champions initiative. The Jazz also works closely with its partners to take steps to be a greener organization. In collaboration with Washakie Renewable Energy, used cooking oil from EnergySolutions Arena is converted into clean, renewable, non-toxic biodiesel. The Jazz also partner with Rocky Mountain Power to identify ways to reduce its energy consumption, leading to significant lighting and HVAC upgrades at the EnergySolutions Arena and Zions Bank Basketball Center, the team’s practice facility. In a further effort to “work green,” the Jazz participates in the NBA’s Mosaic program, designed to measure environmental impact by tracking, analyzing and identifying cost-saving opportunities within the organization’s environmental footprint.
NBA Green is a year-round program and the NBA family continues to identify and implement environmentally sound practices across all of its business areas. To learn more, please visit www.nbagreen.com
