The Miami Heat have done everything they needed to do to claim home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, set single-season franchise records and can even scout their first-round opponent, the Milwaukee Bucks.

The last thing they need to do is stay healthy for their final two games, so a makeshift lineup is likely Monday night when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Miami's latest high mark in a season full of them came Sunday with its 105-93 victory over Chicago. The Heat (66-14) set a franchise mark with their 36th home win and further extended their team record for overall victories in a single season. They will be the top seed in the East playoffs next weekend when their bid to repeat as NBA champions starts with a best-of-seven series against the Bucks.

LeBron James, who said he was "leaning toward" not playing against his former team Monday, already had a stellar effort in Cleveland further tormenting his former fan base on March 20. He totaled 25 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as Miami rallied from a 27-point third-quarter deficit for a 98-95 victory as part of its 27-game win streak.

That game also had a bizarre sequence in which a fan rushed onto the court during the fourth quarter in a bid to appeal to James to return to Cleveland when he is eligible for free agency in 2014. James, who patted the fan on the head before he was taken by security, noted the fan "said he missed me and come back, please."

Resting James, who is among the league leaders in minutes played, also has taken on a new dimension following the season-ending Achilles injury to Lakers star Kobe Bryant. James, though, insists he doesn't worry about such an injury any time he takes the court.

"The opportunity is there," he said. "There's going to be a time when you can't play the game at all because Father Time has caught up with you. So you've got to try to do as much as you can while you can."

Given the physical nature of Sunday's win - Heat players were fouled 30 times - it wouldn't be surprising if some of the regulars join James on the bench for this contest.

Cleveland (24-56) is quite familiar with playing short-handed - Anderson Varejao has been sidelined most of the season while rookie Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving have missed significant chunks of time due to injuries - and is hoping to finish up its season on a positive note. The Cavaliers, though, have dropped four straight and 14 of 16 following their 91-77 defeat at Philadelphia on Sunday.

Tristan Thompson had 12 points and 12 rebounds as Cleveland shot 36.5 percent and committed 18 turnovers as they essentially played their way out of the game in the first quarter while getting outscored 32-19.

"Lack of effort, it's as simple as that," coach Byron Scott said. "It's disappointing. That's why you yank guys out and bring other guys in, to see if they can get it going. They have to play with a lot more energy and a lot more effort than they did tonight."

The Cavaliers do appear to play with more energy against the Heat, losing their three games this season by a combined nine points. James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, though, have combined to average 59.1 points in those games.

LeBron sits as Heat down Cavs 96-95

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James warmed up, got dressed and grabbed a seat.

Like an ordinary fan, he watched the Heat, who had some guy named Jarvis Varnado playing for them.

And Miami won without James - and most of its other stars.

James sat on the bench in street clothes as Norris Cole stripped Kyrie Irving of the ball with 2.2 seconds left to give Miami, with coach Erik Spoelstra resting his starters and most of his top players for the playoffs, a 96-95 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night.

Cole finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists. But it was his only steal on Cleveland's final possession that sealed one of Miami's most unexpected wins this season.

"Everbody had a hand in this win," Spoelstra said. "That's what we wanted to do. We're here. We might as well compete and made the most of it."

James was disappointed to not play in another homecoming game against his former team, but he appreciated Spoelstra's desire to get the NBA champions as healthy and refreshed as possible heading into the postseason. Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers joined James on the bench while Dwyane Wade, Shane Battier and Udonis Haslem stayed back in Miami with minor injuries.

Rashard Lewis scored 19 points and James Jones had 14 for the Heat Light, and Miami got win 65 - a number Spoelstra couldn't have imagined.

"Sixty-five is a big number," Spoelstra said. "I've been part of championship teams and teams that had great success in this league that have never been able to win this many games."

Irving and Tristan Thompson scored 16 apiece for the Cavs, who have lost five straight, 15 of 17 and may soon relieve Byron Scott of his coaching duties.

Scott, though, believes he will return for a fourth season.

"I am going to be back to coach them," he said. "I've got a year left on my contract, so unless I'm told different, I expect to do that."

Irving scored on two driving layups to get the Cavs within one, and Cole gave Cleveland its final chance by missing two free throws with 13.9 seconds left.

After two timeouts, the Cavs ran an isolation play for Irving, who drove left and tried to spin on Cole but had the ball taken away by the Cleveland State product. As Cole dribbled out the final seconds, James and the rest of the Heat's high-paid benchwarmers walked onto the floor to help Miami's reserves celebrate.

"I wanted to stay between him and the basket," Cole said of the final play. "I had a chance to strip the ball and I did. In situatuions like that the game's on the line. You have to buckle up and play the best defense you can."

When the game ended, Irving ran off the floor and skipped a postgame ceremony where Cavs players gave away jerseys and game-worn shoes to fans. A team official said Irving was injured, but that seemed to be news to the 21-year-old All-Star.

"That's what I have?" Irving said sarcastically. "Oh. When was someone going to tell me? I'm hurt again. How long am I going to be out?

James was limited to a pregame workout with Bosh and Chalmers as the Heat played their final road game before finishing the regular season in Orlando on Wednesday. James was officially listed as being out with a "sore right hamstring" but his benching was more to get him set for another possible title run.

This was a fairly uneventful game compared to James' previous visit on March 20, when the Heat overcame a 27-point deficit in the second half to win; a fan wearing a T-shirt asking James to return to Cleveland ran onto the floor; and the giant scoreboard leaked fluid and delayed the opening tip.

With James in a brown sport coat and Bosh wearing his Heat warmups, Spoelstra sent out a starting lineup of Cole, Mike Miller, Joel Anthony, Lewis and 40-year-old journeyman Juwan Howard, who made his first NBA start since April 14, 2010.

Still, Miami's backups were too much for the Cavs.

"Look at their roster," Thompson said. "They're not scrubs. A lot of these guys are champions and can start on other teams."

James warmed up on the Quicken Loans floor, his homecourt for seven years, for more than 30 minutes before heading to the locker room. On his way out, he stopped to sign autographs in the tunnel leading to Miami's dressing room as fans leaned over a railing to hand him balls, caps, posters and anything they could.

An aluminum railing briefly gave way and nearly toppled fans on top of James. But security guards acted quickly and were able to secure the partition before ordering fans to move back before someone was seriously injured.

James said he was disappointed not to play, but supported his coach.

"I'm never sad about sitting," he said, smiling. "I'm sad about not playing."

A third straight losing season for Cleveland is winding down with coach Scott's future in jeopardy.

Scott is already under contract for next season, but there's no guarantee he'll be back. Owner Dan Gilbert, who has not commented on Scott's status, had a courtside seat for Cleveland's last home game. He can't be happy with his team missing the playoffs again, and could be forced to change coaches.

Scott said this season has worn him down.

"I'm fatigued, mentally, physically, a little bit of everything," he said. "But I still wake up every morning ready for work."

The Cavs did show more effort than on Sunday in Philadelphia when Irving scored a career-low 4 points and Scott benched his starters for the fourth quarter.

NOTES: James' statistics are nearly identical to last season's, and Spoelstra doesn't see the reigning MVP slowing down anytime soon. "I don't know if many people anticipated after last year's season and finals run that he would be able to match that and be even more efficient and better year this year," Spoelstra said. "Why wouldn't he be able to improve and take it to another level in the years coming up? He's still so young and he has that type of mindset where he'll always try to improve. ... Cavs rookie G Waiters, who recently missed 10 games with a knee injury, looked perfectly healthy when he soared for a vicious dunk over Chris "Birdman" Andersen, who nearly had a "Spalding" imprint added to his collection of tattoos.

THE FACTS: Point guard Norris Cole collected a season-high 16 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, and a career-high nine assists in leading the Miami Heat to a 96-95 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Small forward Rashard Lewis paced the Heat with 19 points, while shooting guard Ray Allen added 11 points and six assists off the bench. Power forward Tristan Thompson, All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, and shooting guard Dion Waiters scored 16 points apiece for the Cavaliers. Cole stole the ball from Irving on the final possession of the game to give Miami its franchise-record 65th win of the season.

QUOTABLE: "I pride myself on being a good defensive player, and Kyrie is obviously a good offensive player. It's fitting it would come down to that. I wanted to stay between him and the basket, and I had a chance to strip the ball -- and I did."

THE STAT: Miami won the game despite playing without six of its top seven players -- led by its "Big Three" of small forward LeBron James (right hamstring), shooting guard Dwyane Wade (right knee), and power forward Chris Bosh (right knee) -- who were averaging a combined 83.7 points. Also not in uniform for the Heat were point guard Mario Chalmers (right ankle), power forward Udonis Haslem (right ankle), and small forward Shane Battier (left knee). As a result of Miami's depleted roster, 40-year-old power forward Juwan Howard made his first NBA start since April 14, 2010.

TURNING POINT: With the Heat holding a 96-95 lead with 14.2 seconds left, Cole was intentionally fouled by Cavaliers point guard Shaun Livingston. The former Cleveland State standout went to the foul line, but missed both free throws. "I wanted to do something to make up for that," he said. Cole did just that, as soon as the Cavaliers inbounded the ball to Irving with 13.9 ticks remaining. When Irving attempted to drive around him with three seconds left, Cole poked the ball away for the game-saving steal, then ran out the rest of the clock.

QUOTABLE II: "Look at (Miami's) roster. They're not scrubs. They might not have had LeBron or D-Wade or Bosh or some other guys tonight, but a lot of these guys are champions and can start on other teams."

HOT: Heat center Joel Anthony set season highs with 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting, nine rebounds, and 32 minutes. ... Howard had seven points and two boards in 19 minutes. He entered the evening with two points and three rebounds in 14 minutes on the season. ... Cavaliers rookie shooting guard Waiters racked up 16 points, three rebounds, and four assists without a turnover off the bench. ... Thompson notched his 31st double-double of the campaign with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. The second-year pro also grabbed eight offensive boards, giving him a Cleveland record 304 on the season -- five more than the former franchise mark set by current Cavaliers executive Zydrunas Ilgauskas in 2004-2005.

NOT: The Cavaliers finished the season with a 14-27 record at Quicken Loans Arena, which is the third-worst mark in the NBA. ... Irving has made 48-of-138 (34.8 percent) field goal attempts in six games since returning from a sprained left shoulder. He also sprinted off the court immediately after the final horn, instead of taking part in a Fan Appreciation Night ceremony with Cleveland's other 14 players. A Cavaliers official reported that Irving rushed off for treatment on his bruised right heel, but the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year contradicted that claim before his postgame press conference. ... Cleveland rookie center Tyler Zeller recorded two rebounds and no blocked shots in 20 minutes.

QUOTABLE III: "A bruised right heel? That's what I have? Oh, when was someone going to tell me that? I'm hurt again. Damn. How long am I going to be out, 4-6 weeks?"

GOOD MOVE: Heat coach Erik Spoelstra gave natural shooting guards Cole and Allen the keys to Miami's offense, which they ran beautifully. They combined for 15 assists, and dominated their matchups with Irving and Cavaliers shooting guard Wayne Ellington. Miami trailed by 11 points midway through the second quarter, but would lead by 12 early in the fourth. "Guys understand what makes us successful, and that's from one to 15 on our team," Spoelstra said. "Regardless of who plays, there is a Miami Heat pride that comes in and competes."

BAD MOVE: The Cavaliers, who are 64-165 since James fled to Miami as a free agent in July 2010, offered buy-one, get-one free tickets for the game on a recent Fox Sports Ohio telecast. Not only did the deep discount promotion offend some Cleveland season-ticket holders, it failed to sellout the building for a game against the defending NBA champions. An announced crowd of 19,091 was in attendance at Quicken Loans Arena. "This is a big summer for all of us," Irving said. "We all need to move forward and to progress."

NOTABLE: Cavaliers coach Byron Scott, whose job is rumored to be in jeopardy, spoke about his future following the game. "I am going to be back to coach (next season)," he said. "I've got a year left on my contract, so unless I'm told different, I expect to do that." ... Cleveland did not have the services of shooting guard C.J. Miles (concussion, forehead laceration), power forward Luke Walton (right ankle sprain), and center Anderson Varejao (season-ending right knee surgery). ... Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert sat courtside, next to Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Phil Taylor and several other local professional athletes.
