Celtics-Heat Preview

With another regular-season accomplishment checked off their laundry list of accolades, the Miami Heat are getting healthy and gearing up for the playoffs.

If the Boston Celtics aren't careful, they just may wind up seeing them pretty often over the next few weeks.

In what's arguably been the Eastern Conference's premier matchup in recent years, the Celtics looks to strengthen their grip on a No. 7 seed - thus avoiding a first-round postseason trip to South Beach - when the clubs meet Friday night in Miami.

For all of the game's importance to Boston, the stakes in this one will be considerably lessened from previous meetings, even though the Heat have knocked the Celtics out of the playoffs each season since LeBron James came on board in 2010.

James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are expected to play for Miami after missing time with various injuries, although Shane Battier and Udonis Haslem are out. The Celtics won't be as fortunate with their personnel, as Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett are not expected to suit up due to ankle issues.

Wade missed six straight games with ankle and knee problems, and his minutes will surely be limited as a result.

"I'm sure my lungs will need that," he said.

James, who sat out four of the past six with a strained right hamstring, and Bosh, out the last three due to flu-like symptoms, could have taken another night off thanks to their team's 103-98 victory at Washington on Wednesday. The Heat (62-16) set a franchise mark for wins and clinched home-court advantage through the NBA finals.

The effort put the finishing touches on a record-setting season that also saw a 27-game win streak.

"We've had an amazing year," Battier said. "We've set a lot of records and we've had a lot of storylines the whole year. Hopefully our best storyline is still ahead of us. That's what we're saving the high-fives for."

Despite the absences of its three stars, Miami hardly missed a beat thanks to its reserves, proving that the Heat have plenty of depth going into the playoffs.

"Most definitely, we would be a playoff team," forward Rashard Lewis said of Miami's bench after he scored 17 against the Wizards. "Probably not a top-three team, but I think anywhere from there we'd be fighting for a playoff spot, just because we've got a lot of veterans on the team, a lot of smart guys on the team that know how to play the game."

The Celtics (40-38) have turned out to be the short-handed squad for this game with the announcement that Pierce and Garnett won't play, adding to the club's predicament.

Boston has a three-game lead over Milwaukee for the seventh seed, but it lost the season series to the Bucks and finishes with three of four on the road.

The Celtics fell 101-93 at home to Brooklyn on Wednesday, continuing an inconsistent season that has seen them alternate wins and losses over their last four games.

"I think we're focusing too much on the playoffs, and that's not here yet," said Garnett, who made his last two starts after missing eight games with a bad left ankle. "I think we need to focus and lock in on these games that we have left and put the energy and effort behind that."

Despite the significant difference in records, the teams have battled in extremely competitive games in 2013 - both in Boston. Miami won 105-103 on March 18 on a James jumper with 10.5 seconds left, and the Celtics earned a 100-98 victory in two overtimes Jan. 27.

MIAMI (AP) LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade had not played together in a couple of weeks, so the Miami Heat needed some time to get back into rhythm.

About 12 minutes, to be precise.

The Heat scored 41 points in the second quarter - their highest-scoring period of the season - to erase what was an early 13-point deficit, and went on to beat the Boston Celtics 109-101 on Friday night.

"Felt good to get back in the lineup with the other `Big Two,"' James said. "It's great. We're just trying to get some more continuity, get our legs up under us."

James had 20 points and nine assists in 29 minutes, and Rashard Lewis added 19 to lead a huge night for the Miami bench, which outscored Boston's reserves 52-14.

Bosh and Ray Allen each scored 17 for Miami, which got 12 from Norris Cole.

Wade, back after missing six games with bone bruises around his right kneecap, scored 11 points in 34 minutes for Miami, which won its 35th home game to tie the standard set in 2004-05. That was one of two single-season marks for Miami on the evening - the Heat also made 12 3-pointers to push their total for the year to 686, topping the mark of 678 in the 1996-97 campaign.

"It was good to have most of our guys back tonight," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "And we've got to keep on moving forward."

Miami has three games left, two at home, and already has clinched home-court advantage for the entirety of the NBA playoffs. Spoelstra said all players will continue to be evaluated on a day-to-day basis, though it seems highly unlikely that several regulars wouldn't get at least one more game to rest nagging aches and pains before the playoffs open next weekend.

Miami played Friday without Shane Battier and Udonis Haslem.

Jeff Green scored 25 for Boston, which played without Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, both out with ankle soreness. Celtics coach Doc Rivers expects both Pierce and Garnett to play on Saturday in Orlando.

"Orlando is a team that, obviously, you see them. I don't want to give them any fuel, but they're terrible," Celtics guard Jason Terry said. "So we must go in there with whoever we have and scrap for the win."

Jordan Crawford added 20, Courtney Lee scored 18 and Brandon Bass had 17 for Boston.

The Celtics need one more win to wrap up the No. 7 spot in the East, which would lock Milwaukee into the No. 8 seed and a first-round matchup with Miami.

"I thought their subs beat our subs if you want to just simplify it," Rivers said.

Boston lost three of four to the Heat this season, and if the teams are to meet in the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, it would now almost certainly have to be in the Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics lost in seven games to Miami in that round a year ago.

The Celtics came out flying early, running out to a 10-point lead after the opening quarter and extending that lead to 30-17 when Lee opened the second with a 3-pointer.

After that, it was largely all Miami.

The Heat shot 16 of 19 from the field in the second quarter - their best shooting in any quarter since 2007, and the NBA's third-best, single-quarter effort this season - on the way to turning around the game. Miami's bench shot 8 of 9 in the quarter, scoring 22 points, one less than Boston's entire roster in the period.

Miami held massive edges in both rebounding (9-2) and assists (12-3) in the quarter, and when Wade beat the buzzer with a layup Miami went into the break with a 58-50 lead.

"I've still got some work to do," said Wade, who appeared to bang his knee against the basket support Friday but said he was feeling fine.

Boston got within five in the third, but again, the Heat bench proved the difference, with Lewis ending the quarter with a pair of 3-pointers that helped Miami take a 12-point lead into the final 12 minutes.

One more gasp from the Celtics came late in the fourth, when a three-point play by Bass got Boston within 99-90. But Terry was called for a technical 16 seconds later on a play where Allen was fouled, and the former Celtic responded by making all three ensuing free throws. A minute later, James, Bosh, Wade and Allen all checked out for the final time.

"We want to continue just to work our habits throughout these last three games of the regular season," James said. "And then the real season begins."

NOTES: James, Wade and Bosh all sound like they want to play against Chicago - the team that stopped Miami's 27-game winning streak - on Sunday, though Spoelstra hasn't committed to a lineup. ... Five of James' first six baskets were dunks. ... Miami's previous season best for scoring in a quarter was 40 against Atlanta, that coming in a fourth period. ... Actor Ken Jeong was in the crowd. ... Bosh returned from a three-game absence, the first of those because of a sore knee and the last two because of flu-like symptoms. ... When Terry got his technical foul, Rivers called timeout and spent the entirety of the 20 seconds explaining his position to referee Mark Lindsay - never appearing to talk to his team during the stoppage. ... Miami had 28 assists to Boston's 15.

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat supporting cast has received little respect in the past.

Lately, it has proven more than capable of leading the team victory. Even with the return of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat's other players were just as key in a 109-101 victory against the Boston Celtics Friday at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The Heat bench combined for 52 points to help offset a below average game from Wade in his return from injury. Wade was playing for the first time in six games, sitting because of a sore knee. James and Bosh were also back after missing Wednesday's game at Washington.

James led the way with 20 points, nine assists and six rebounds while Bosh finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Wade scored just 11 points on 4 of 12 shooting in 34 minutes.

The Heat were able to make up for Wade's lack of production with strong performances from Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen off the bench. They combined for 36 points, making 6 of 9 from 3-point range.

The Celtics played without starters Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, who were rested because they end the season with a pair of back-to-backs. Forward Jeff Green led Boston with 25 points and eight rebounds.

QUOTABLE: "It took us a little while to wake up defensively ... You have to give them credit, obviously. They were playing at a different pace in that first quarter. The second quarter, we committed a little bit more. That's ultimately how we want it to look."

THE STAT: The Heat bench outscored the Celtics 52-14.

TURNING POINT: After trailing by 10 in the first quarter, the Heat tied the franchise-record with 41 points in the second. Miami shot 84 percent in the quarter, taking an eight-point lead into the half.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought their substitutes beat our substitutes. I thought that early on we attacked and moved the ball and that is what you have to do against this team. But as they made a run, we stopped attacking."

HOT: Lewis showed why he's another reliable option for the Heat. He is just one of the role players taking advantage of the Heat's decision to rest the starters. The highlight came when Lewis completed a four-point play in the fourth quarter. He finished with 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting.

NOT: It was Wade's first time on the court in six games, and it showed. He talked earlier about getting his wind back before the postseason. Expect him to play against Chicago Sunday to help him get back in the flow conditioning-wise.

GOOD MOVE: It was definitely a good decision to play Wade. He could have easily sat the remainder of the regular season but he showed he needs to get back into rhythm after being out of the lineup for so long.

BAD MOVE: The Celtics received a bad break when Green sustained a left elbow injury midway through the fourth quarter. Green was in obvious pain when he left the court. If it is severe, it would almost certainly hurt their chances in the playoffs. They are on pace to face the New York Knicks in the first round.

NOTABLE: The Heat won the season series against the Celtics for the first time since 2005-06, the year of the franchise's first championship ... The Heat improved to 35-4 at home .... Miami is 45-2 when it scores at least 100 points ... Pierce and Garnett are both expected to play Saturday at Orlando.
