The Houston Rockets just won their first game of the season without James Harden.

If they can get another balanced effort Monday night at home, they might be fine even if their best player doesn't return to face the lowly Orlando Magic.

Coming off back-to-back losses, Houston (40-33) didn't have Harden - the team leader with 26.0 points per game - in uniform Saturday against the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Clippers due to a sore right foot. His absence proved not to matter as five Rockets scored in double figures and the team regrouped from two sub-par defensive efforts to hold the Clippers to 31 second-half points.

Houston had gone winless in two previous games with Harden unavailable due to injuries.

"We had a lot of guys play well," said coach Kevin McHale, whose team can move within a game of idle Golden State for sixth place in the Western Conference. "The ball was really moving tonight, and it was good to see that. Everybody was in tune."

That included rookie big man Greg Smith, who finished with nine points and eight rebounds in his first NBA start, and Francisco Garcia, who matched Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Lin for the team lead with 15 points after previously falling out of McHale's rotation.

Those kind of secondary contributions could make the Rockets a dangerous team if they make the postseason for the first time since 2008-09 - also the last time the Rockets swept the season series from Orlando.

Harden was questionable for the last matchup with the Magic due to a knee problem, but scored 11 of his team-best 24 points in the fourth quarter of a 118-110 victory March 1. The Rockets ended a five-game skid in this series.

The Magic (19-55) will be trying to snap a seven-game road losing streak as they continue a five-game trip that started with a 97-88 defeat to Atlanta on Saturday. Two days earlier, Orlando ended an eight-game skid with a 97-92 victory over Washington.

"We're putting together quarters, we're putting together halves," said coach Jacque Vaughn, whose team hasn't won two straight since a season-best four-game run Dec. 14-19. "That will eventually add up to putting together games and consecutive games."

Despite losing 42 of 49, the injury-plagued Magic have some reason for optimism. Forward Tobias Harris has been surprisingly good since being acquired from Milwaukee in the J.J. Redick deal in February, averaging a team-best 16.3 points with 8.0 rebounds for Orlando.

He had a then-career-best 27 points with 10 rebounds March 1.

Center Nikola Vucevic more than held his own against Houston's Omer Asik in that game with 18 points and 10 boards, and the Magic could use that type of effort again after he scored 17 and grabbed 15 boards Saturday following a five-game absence due to a concussion.

Beno Udrih could be the Magic's starting point guard for a second consecutive game if Jameer Nelson (sprained ankle) can't go. Nelson missed the previous matchup with Houston with a left patella tendon contusion.

Rockets beat Magic without Harden, Parsons

HOUSTON (AP) Playing without their top two scorers, the Houston Rockets stumbled onto another effective way to put up points.

Omer Asik matched his career high with 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, and the Rockets hardly missed James Harden and Chandler Parsons in a 111-103 win over the Orlando Magic on Monday night.

Harden sat out for the second straight game with a sore right foot and Parsons missed the game with an illness. So the Rockets turned to Asik and 6-foot-10 Greg Smith and found easy baskets inside most of the night.

"You can always do anything with any five players," point guard Jeremy Lin said, "it's just a matter of buying into it and going through the kinks of doing something new at this point."

Lin had 19 points and 11 assists, most of them to Asik. The 7-footer made 11 of 13 shots - most of them dunks - and Smith added 12 points.

"They both have the ability to finish around the rim and create a lot of problems," Lin said.

Rookie Maurice Harkless scored a career-high 28 points and Beno Udrih had 17 points and 10 assists for the Magic, who rallied from 25 points down to pull within five late in the fourth quarter. But Orlando couldn't quite pull off the comeback, and lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

"These guys don't quit," Harkless said. "No one on this team quits."

The early deficit turned out to be too much to overcome.

Smith started the game with a one-handed dunk and the Rockets were off and running. Smith and Asik got any shot they wanted early on and the Rockets opened with a 21-6 spurt.

"We needed the chance to score inside," Asik said, "and we needed it to be easy for us."

The Magic not only offered little defensive resistance inside, they also missed 10 of their first 14 shots, one of them an airball from the corner by DeQuan Jones. Houston stretched the lead to 20 with Asik and Smith on the bench resting for the final three minutes of the opening quarter.

Orlando cut the deficit to 11 early in the second quarter, but Asik got open for another dunk with 6:06 left in the half and the Rockets widened the gap again. Donatas Motiejunas finished a fast break with a layup and Carlos Delfino rattled in a 3-pointer from the corner for a 53-36 lead.

Asik had a double-double by halftime - 14 points and 12 rebounds - and overpowered any Orlando big man who tried to get in his way. The Rockets shot 53 percent (26 of 49) in the first half and led by 22 at the break.

"We didn't have a stop (defensively) on the first 11 possessions of the game," Orlando coach Jacque Vaughn said. "We have to have a better mindset and focus going into the game."

Houston coach Kevin McHale, meanwhile, liked how the offense functioned with Asik and Smith on the floor together. When Orlando collapsed its defense, the perimeter opened for 3-point shots.

"If we move, read and react, I think we would be able to play those two," McHale said. "We've got to have an offensive set where we look in there, get off it and start playing our style."

The Magic mounted a 17-4 run early in the third quarter, but could only get within 12. Lin bounced a pass to Asik for another dunk and sank a 3-pointer to restore a 17-point lead. Asik grabbed his 18th rebound off a Harkless miss and heaved a baseball pass to Lin for a layup and an 85-66 lead.

Asik and Lin were relaxing on the bench in the fourth quarter and the game's outcome seemingly in hand. But Tobias Harris scored six points and Udrih sank a 3-pointer during a 14-2 Orlando run that trimmed the deficit to five with about two minutes left.

McHale was ready to re-insert the starters if the game had gotten any tighter.

"I was getting pretty close," he said.

But James Anderson, who started for Harden, tipped in a Delfino miss and the Rockets hung on to go eight games over .500 for the first time this season.

Notes: Orlando's first-quarter point total (14) was a season low for a Houston opponent. ... Harris had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Orlando. ... Asik has 31 double-doubles this season. ... Garcia started in Parson's place. ... The Rockets recalled F Terrence Jones from their developmental league affiliate in Rio Grande Valley. THE FACTS: With their top two scorers sidelined, the Houston Rockets relied on the strength of their big men and the guile of their point guard to dispatch the Orlando Magic 111-103 on Monday night.

Omer Asik scored a career-high-tying 22 points on 11-for-13 shooting and grabbed 18 rebounds in less than 28 minutes. Jeremy Lin added 19 points and season-high-tying 11 assists, while Greg Smith netted 10 of his 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting in a dominant first quarter for Houston (41-33). The Rockets won for the fifth time in their last seven games while securing its first season-sweep of Orlando since the 2008-09 season.

Moe Harkless netted a career-best 28 points on 10-for-18 shooting to pace the Magic (19-56), who have lost eight consecutive road games and 43 of 50 overall. Five other players scored in double-figures for Orlando, which used a furious fourth-quarter rally to make the final score appear respectable.

The Rockets played without starting shooting guard James Harden (sore right foot), who missed his second straight game, and small forward Chandler Parsons (food poisoning). Their absences, however, did not prevent Houston's high-octane offense from exploding for 90 points on 50.7 percent shooting over the first three periods.

QUOTABLE: "I promise you, if you just said, 'On April 1, you could be 41-33.' last year at training camp, I would have said, 'Let's just skip to April 1.'"

THE STAT: The Rockets did not squander their possessions and finished the game with 98 field-goal attempts and only nine turnovers. Houston had committed less than 10 turnovers only twice this season entering Monday.

TURNING POINT: Orlando was never in this one until the closing minutes, trailing from start to finish as it struggled to keep Houston's offense from living near the rim in the early going. The Rockets scored 22 of their first 27 points in the paint as they built a 27-9 lead and never looked back.

QUOTABLE II: "The very first possession of the game set the tone. They threw the ball into Greg Smith, and he got an easy jump hook in the middle."

HOT: Lin recorded his first double-double since Feb. 12 and knocked down at least half of his shot attempts for the first time in six games. The third-year point guard's play in the third quarter was the key to keeping Orlando at bay, as Lin scored 10 points to go with four assists.

NOT: Tobias Harris had his way with the Rockets the first time these clubs met this season in Orlando, finishing with a then-career-high 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting and 10 rebounds. The second time around, Houston's defense suffocated Harris and never allowed him to establish a rhythm. Including Monday's 6-for-17 effort, Harris has shot 31.4 percent (11-for-35) overall in his last two games.

QUOTABLE III: "We punished them down low. I was wearing [Harris] out so he wouldn't be able to ... use most of his abilities on the outside, [like] being quicker than me and trying to out-think me, because he was so tired."

GOOD MOVE: The Rockets utilized their size advantage in the post and fed Asik and Smith repeatedly as they began the game on a 27-9 run. Houston continued its assault on Orlando's interior defense for the remainder opening period, during which the Rockets poured in 22 points in the paint while shooting a scorching 15-for-26 (58.0 percent) from the field.

BAD MOVE: The Magic did not challenge the weak link in Houston's offense, James Anderson, nearly enough. With Anderson struggling to convert on the offensive end, Orlando could have at least dared someone other than Asik, Lin or Smith to carry the load offensively for the Rockets.

NOTABLE: The Rockets have labeled both Harden and Parsons as day-to-day. ... McHale, a former Big Ten standout at the University of Minnesota, did not provide a serious reply when asked about Parsons' illness, opting to poke fun at the former University of Florida athlete. "The Gators got whooped by a Big Ten team, and his belly hurt," McHale said. ... The Magic played without starting point guard Jameer Nelson, who sat out for the second game in a row with a sprained right ankle. He, too, is listed as day-to-day. ... Houston allowed an opponent-season-low 14 points in the first quarter. ... The Rockets will finish the season 21-9 overall and 12-3 at home against Eastern Conference competition. ... Houston improved to 16-0 when it leads by at least 10 points at the start of the fourth quarter. ... Orlando has not defeated a winning team since it beat the Pacers on Jan. 16 in Indiana. ... The Magic fell to 2-36 this season when they hand out fewer assists than their opponent. ... Three Orlando players (Harris, Beno Udrih and Nikola Vucevic) recorded double-doubles in the losing effort.
