The Los Angeles Lakers made it look easy when they racked up win after win after win for an NBA-record 33 straight games.

The Miami Heat, not so much.

Those Lakers of 1971-72 won 17 games during that streak by 15 points or more. The Heat take more of a grind-it-out approach, often getting into trouble before flipping a switch and pulling away.

"We're going to get everybody's best shot because of the streak," Heat guard Mario Chalmers said.

That's why instead of savoring the 27 in a row they've already won, the Heat are bracing for perhaps one of the biggest road tests so far in their pursuit of those Lakers. Miami (56-14) plays at Chicago on Wednesday night, a renewal of a rivalry that, on paper, certainly has lost some of the sparkle it had a year or two ago.

The Bulls (38-31) still don't have injured point guard Derrick Rose back in the lineup and have lost 13 of their last 22 games. Still, the Heat expect a playoff-type, rough-and-tumble meeting.

"Our historic run is about winning championships," Heat star LeBron James said. "That's what we want to be known for. It's part of a process. Whatever comes in between that, we can be excited about it. We didn't have a goal in mind to say, `Let's go on a long consecutive win streak,' but our goal is to win every game when we are on the floor."

In recent days, that hasn't been easy. Boston had the Heat down by 17 early and 13 in the fourth quarter. Cleveland put Miami in a 27-point hole, and against Detroit and Charlotte, the Heat trailed by 11 before pulling away. On Monday night, the Orlando Magic and Heat were tied late in the third quarter before James keyed a 20-2 run that changed everything.

"We like knowing we have that switch," guard Dwyane Wade said. "We just don't want to use it too much."

Chicago has already beaten the Heat once this season, on Miami's home floor. On Friday, the Heat head to New Orleans, where the Hornets just snapped Denver's 15-game winning streak. And Sunday's game at San Antonio is against not only the Western Conference leader and potential NBA Finals opponent, but also likely will have huge implications for the No. 1 overall playoff seed.

Whether the opponent is a playoff team like Chicago or a lottery-bound club, James said the approach has been steady.

"It has been tough all year," he said. "It hasn't been easy for us at all. Every team has given us their best. We know that Chicago is going to be a tough game for us, and playing in that building. We want to come out with our game plan ... and give ourselves a chance to win."

The Bulls are percentage points ahead of the Atlanta Hawks for fifth place in the East and 2 1/2 games behind Brooklyn for fourth, which carries home-court advantage for the first round. As a result, they are thinking more about helping themselves than being the team that ends Miami's historic run.

"It would be great to be the team that beats them, but at the same time we can't think about that," center Nazr Mohammed told the team's official website. "We're a team that's trying to grind out some wins and this is one that we need. ... We just want to go out and get this victory."

Mohammed, who had four points and 10 rebounds in Sunday's 104-97 win at Minnesota, could be in line for his third straight start if Joakim Noah is unable to go again due to a foot injury.

Since Miami landed James and Chris Bosh to play alongside Wade in the summer of 2010, no team has confounded the Heat more than the Bulls, and it's not even close. The Heat and Bulls have played 14 times since then, each team winning seven, and Miami averaged only 90.1 points in those games. That's six points less than they averaged against anyone else in that span, and 11 points shy of what they typically score against the rest of the league.

"You can't necessarily gauge them against other teams," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Monday night, after Miami topped Orlando 108-94. "When they play against us, it's highly competitive. We've played them in the playoffs. All of our games have been physical and hotly contested. You have to deal with the physical aspect but also the mental aspect of staying with it, grinding possessions."

Moments after the Heat extended their winning streak to 27, Spoelstra urged his team to be "grateful for this opportunity and stay in this moment."

That's his way of saying, yes, enjoy the moment but don't lose sight of the only goal that matters - another NBA title. That's what the players talked about in the locker room after the Orlando game, as they wolfed down chicken, pasta and vegetables and headed to the bus.

"To be honest with you, we don't really think about the streak," Heat forward Udonis Haslem said. "People might find this hard to believe, but if you start thinking about a streak, that's when you slip up. If you start thinking about the Lakers' record, that's when you're going to slip up."

Besides, streaks don't come with championship rings.

"Not at all," Haslem said.

Heat's winning streak ends at 27 in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) With two-tenths of a second left, LeBron James took the final inbounds pass in his own end, dropped the ball to let time expire, turned and walked toward the exit.

No buzzer beater.

No fourth-quarter rally.

No record for James and the Miami Heat, either.

The Heat's bid for NBA history ended Wednesday night when their 27-game winning streak was snapped by the Chicago Bulls 101-97, setting off a raucous celebration inside United Center.

Miami finished six shy of the 33-game record held by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

James said there was no shame in falling short.

"It's one of the best that this league has ever seen," James said, referring to the streak that began on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3. "We recognized that and rightfully so."

James tried to spur yet another comeback in the final minutes, getting mad after a rough foul. But the reigning MVP could never get the defending champions even or, more importantly, ahead.

Luol Deng scored 28 points, Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 17 rebounds, and the Bulls brought the Heat's stampede to a screeching halt.

Miami's superstar did all he could to keep the run going, scoring 32 points and even collecting a flagrant foul during a physical final few minutes.

"We haven't had a chance to really have a moment to know what we just did," James said. "We had a moment, just very fortunate, very humbling and blessed to be part of this team and be part of a streak like that."

The Heat hadn't lost since the Pacers beat them in Indianapolis on Feb. 1. But after grinding out some close wins lately, including a rally from 27 down in Cleveland, no one counted them out until the final buzzer.

For the better part of two months, they were the NBA's comeback kings. They erased seven double-digit deficits during the streak. They found themselves trailing in the fourth quarter 11 times, and won them all.

Not Wednesday.

"We understand, probably more so later on in our careers, the significance of that. And then that was it," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We took that moment to acknowledge it, to acknowledge each other, that experience, but it was never about the streak. We have a bigger goal, but also right now, it's about `Are we getting better?"'

They walked off the floor stoically, not exchanging any handshakes or pleasantries with the Bulls. James slapped high-fives with a couple teammates and coaches, then glared at a fan who grabbed his head as he headed toward the tunnel leading to the visitors' locker room.

James was frustrated on the court at times, and showed more of the same in the locker room afterward with regard to how he's officiated.

He cited two instances from Wednesday alone - a play where Kirk Hinrich took him down with two hands in the first quarter, and Taj Gibson appearing to make contact around his neck with about 4 minutes remaining - where he thought the contact was excessive. Referees reviewed the Gibson hit, but did not award a flagrant foul. So, seconds later, James tried to barrel through Carlos Boozer on a screen, and got called for a Flagrant 1 himself.

"Those are not basketball plays and it's been happening all year," James said. "I've been able to keep my cool and try to tell Spo, `Let's not worry about it too much,' but it is getting to me a little bit."

The Bulls, meanwhile, whooped and slapped hands with anyone they could reach after clinching a playoff berth.

"It's a five-second moment of reflection before we move on to the rest of the season," Dwyane Wade said. "In here, it didn't feel like we were on this amazing streak."

What a run it was, though.

It will go down as the second-longest winning streak in the history of American major pro sports. And some of those Lakers believed their time would pass as Miami's streak rolled along, with Jerry West among those saying that he believed the reigning champions had a real shot at pulling it off.

The streak began in Toronto, a day when Heat players were mildly annoyed about having to miss football's title game. When San Francisco and Baltimore were to be playing, the Heat were to be flying home for a game the following night.

So team officials team changed course, as a surprise.

Miami beat the Raptors that afternoon, then stayed in the city several more hours to watch the Super Bowl together, an event highlighted by Shane Battier giving an unplanned speech about appreciating little moments as a team.

For whatever reason, the Heat were unbeatable for nearly the next two months.

And they won games in a number of different ways.

They blew out good teams like the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Bulls, then inexplicably struggled with lottery-bound Cleveland, Detroit, Sacramento, Charlotte and Orlando. They rallied from 13 points down in the final 8 minutes to beat Boston, from a 27-point, third-quarter hole at Cleveland, and from 11-point deficits against Detroit and Charlotte - all those coming in a seven-day span, no less.

"There are several teams that can do it," Pistons guard Jose Calderon said, when asked what it would take for someone to beat Miami. "It's difficult to maintain this concentration every day. It will likely take everyone to have a bad day."

Even when those bad days happened, the Heat found ways to win.

A layup by James with 3.2 seconds left against Orlando. Double-overtime against Sacramento. Huge comebacks. Whatever it took.

There were times when even the Heat themselves didn't know how long the streak was. Because it was interrupted by the All-Star break, Spoelstra was surprised when a staff member said something about Miami having won nine in a row. When it was at 24 games, Wade made a reference to "23, 24, whatever it is."

They insisted they did not care about it, whatever the number was.

Heat President Pat Riley played for the Lakers team that won 33 in a row, and remained silent throughout Miami's streak, mainly because he rarely gives interviews these days but more so because the official team stance was that it simply did not matter. This season is championship-or-bust for Miami, one where nothing else other than raising yet another Larry O'Brien Trophy will satisfy.

Still, the streak will go down as the story of the regular season.

"It was more important to everybody else than it was to us," Chris Bosh said. "We never cared too much about talking about it. It wasn't a subject of conversation until (others mentioned it)."

When it started, Miami was 5 1/2 games behind San Antonio for the overall NBA lead, only a half-game ahead of New York in the Eastern Conference race, held just a four-game edge over Atlanta in the Southeast Division and were the league's ninth-best road team in terms of winning percentage.

Funny what two months or so without losing can do.

The Heat now sit atop the overall NBA standings, gained 12 games over New York in the East entering Wednesday, put away the Hawks for good several weeks ago and are now, by far, the league's best road team. And with the streak over, all that's left now is getting ready for the postseason.

"When you look at what they've done, to be the defending world champions and to have a winning streak like that knowing that everyone's chasing you, credit them," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "I think you can learn from them."

The Heat trailed by as much as 13 in the first half, took the lead while outscoring Chicago 22-14 in the third quarter and were within two early in the fourth after a basket by Wade.

That's when Deng answered with a 3-pointer from the wing and Kirk Hinrich brought the crowd to its feet with a floater. Then, after a layup by James, Deng nailed a 3 to make it 83-75 with just over six minutes left.

It got testy after that. James did all he could to keep the streak going, taking enough hard hits that even his headband was dislodged, and finished with seven rebounds.

Bosh scored 21. Wade added 18 points after a sore right knee sidelined him for victories over Charlotte and Orlando, but the Heat fell to a team that continues to give them fits even though Derrick Rose has been sidelined all year.

Deng came up big, burying four 3-pointers. He also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Boozer was a force inside. Jimmy Butler provided a spark with 17 points and the Bulls stopped Miami even though they were missing Joakim Noah (right foot), Marco Belinelli (abdominal strain) and Richard Hamilton (lower back).

"It says we have a good team," Chicago's Taj Gibson said. "It's all about what we think in the locker room. A lot of people kind of write us off every other day, but we just stick to our principles and do what we have to do."

For the Heat, luck simply ran out after recent wins in which they rallied trailed Boston by 17, Cleveland by 27 and Detroit and Charlotte by 11 each. They were also tied with Orlando late in the third quarter before pulling away, and when Battier nailed a 3 with 4:30 left in the third, it looked like they just might pull this one out, too.

They were leading 59-58 after that shot, and they were up by two before Boozer converted a three-point play off a neat bounce pass from Gibson in the closing seconds to send Chicago into the fourth quarter with a 69-68 lead.

But they came up short down the stretch, fans chanting "End of streak! End of streak!" in the closing minute.

"We were much more competitive in the second half. It became make or miss in the fourth quarter, and we couldn't get the necessary stops we needed to," Spoelstra said. "In the last handful of games, those shots were going down and maybe that masked a few things going down the stretch."

There was a rumor that Rose would make his long-awaited return from a knee injury after rapper Waka Flocka Flame posted on Twitter, "Word is D.Rose back." The two are fans of each other, but the superstar point guard squashed it at the morning shootaround, with two words - "Not tonight."

Rose actually sounded more like someone who will sit out the entire season, saying his recovery is "in God's hands." He hasn't played since he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in last year's playoff opener against Philadelphia, sending the top-seeded Bulls to a first-round exit, and his comeback has been an ongoing soap opera.

The Bulls were the biggest threat to Miami in the Eastern Conference the past two years, but without their superstar, they're just part of the pack.

Even so, no one has given the Heat more trouble since James and Bosh united with Wade in 2010. They had split 14 games leading up to this one, with Chicago winning at Miami in early January and the Heat returning the favor at the United Center last month.

"All in all, it's been a great one," Bosh said. "We still have a lot of work to do. The streak wasn't important to us. What's important to us is winning the title. That's what we work on. That's what we're here for."

Notes: Miami had won 13 straight on the road and fell one shy of the club record. ... Thibodeau said Noah was improving but wasn't ready to return. "It's better, but he's not quite there," Thibodeau said. "I just want to be smart about it." ... Tom Boerwinkle, the former Bulls center who had a franchise-record 37 rebounds in a 1970 game against the Phoenix Suns, has died. He was 67. Bulls spokesman Tim Hallam said Wednesday that a family member informed team officials of Boerwinkle's death, and the University of Tennessee issued a statement saying the former Volunteers player died Tuesday at his home near Chicago after a lengthy illness. Boerwinkle played 10 seasons with the Bulls from 1968-69 to 1977-78 and also worked as an analyst on the team's radio broadcasts from 1991-94.

THE FACTS: The short-handed Chicago Bulls bullied LeBron James and the Miami Heat for the second time in three games this season, snapping their historic 27-game win streak with a 101-97 win Wednesday night in Chicago. This time they did it not only without Derrick Rose but also injured center Joakim Noah, along with guards Marco Belinelli and Richard Hamilton.

In the process, the Bulls reaffirmed the four-point plan to dethrone the defending champs -- play physical, move the ball (27 assists on 40 field goals), pound the boards (43-31 advantage) and, well, play physical. The tag team of Luol Deng (28 points, seven rebounds) and Carlos Boozer (21 points, 17 rebounds) had their way with the visitors for much of the night. Guards Jimmy Butler (14 points), Kirk Hinrich (six assists) and Nate Robinson (14 points) also played key roles.

James totaled 32 points, seven assists and four blocked shots. But, unlike in several games in the streak, he was unable to will the team to victory in the second half. So frustrated became James that, late in the fourth quarter, he threw a hard shoulder into Boozer and was assessed a flagrant foul, his first in six years. Chris Bosh added 21 points. Dwyane Wade scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds on a bum right foot, which he tweaked in the final minutes.

More bad news for the Eastern Conference leaders: guard Mario Chalmers landed awkwardly on his right foot in the fourth quarter and was seen in a walking boot afterward.

QUOTABLE: "For the first time, I mentioned the streak in front of the guys [afterward]. It was worthy of at least stepping back for those few short moments. It was a heck of an experience for all of us to have together. We'll understand probably more so later on in our careers, the significance of that."

TURNING POINT: James and company were in position to seize control through the fourth quarter, but Deng would have none of it. In a 55-second span, the home team went on a decisive 8-2 run, which Deng started and finished with 3-pointers to give his team an 83-75 advantage.

QUOTABLE V: "We really focused on moving the ball. We can't beat them holding the ball. Guys did a good job of finding each other."

HOT: In the first period, the Bulls shot 58 percent (14-for-24) in the field en route to a 32-22 lead.

NOT: The winners were limited to 14 points in the third quarter but still clung to a 69-68 lead.

GOOD MOVE: The Bulls game plan called for a ban on dunks, the kind of momentum-makers that often fuel the Heat offense. Hinrich wasted no time to execute it. Four minutes into the game, the veteran grabbed James and pulled him to the ground rather than allow a clear path to the basket.

QUOTABLE VI: "Kirk Hinrich basically grabbed me with two hands and brought me to the ground. On the last one, Taj Gibson was able to collar me around my shoulder and bring me to the ground. Those are not basketball plays. It has been happening all year and I've been able to keep my cool, but it is getting to me a little bit."

BAD MOVE: Spoelstra rolled the dice on forward Udonis Haslem with two fouls in the first period. The forward pushed off Boozer for his third foul with six minutes, 45 minutes left in the quarter and sat out the remainder of the half.

NOTABLE: Before the game, a moment of silence was observed in memory of former Bulls center Tom Boerwinkle, who passed away at 67 years of age. He spent 10 seasons with the team as a player and four more as a broadcaster. ... The Bulls clinched a postseason berth, while the Heat failed in their bid to nail down the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs. ... The Heat trailed in the fourth quarter for only the 36th game this season. ... Bulls swingman Butler entered the game with an average of 45.1 minutes in his first seven career starts, the third most for any player with at least three starts since the 1970-71 season. He logged 43 minutes in this one.

IN THE ARENA: Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp were among those in the 122nd consecutive sellout crowd at the United Center.
