The Denver Nuggets are on the verge of their longest win streak in franchise history, but coach George Karl hasn't been pleased with his team's recent efforts.

After a pair of close calls, the Nuggets should get Ty Lawson and Wilson Chandler back as they try to make history Monday night when they visit the New Orleans Hornets.

Denver (49-22) matched its 1969-70 ABA team's record of 15 straight wins Saturday by holding on for a 101-95 victory over Sacramento. But after leading by 15 late in the second quarter, the Nuggets trailed entering the final period before outscoring the visitors 31-24.

They also needed Corey Brewer's six points in the final 10 seconds to edge Philadelphia 101-100 on Thursday.

"What I've been telling the team, telling them for three days, the next (11) games I don't want to hear about rest. I don't want to hear we're tired. I want our attitude to be the best basketball we've played all year," Karl said. "And if you don't want to do that, then I'll play somebody else. I don't want to hear about my body hurts, I'm sore.

"Everybody plays the same amount of games, and resting's not going to get us ready for the opportunities."

Danilo Gallinari had nine of his team-best 19 points in the fourth quarter Saturday and led six players in double figures. The Nuggets were playing a second straight game without Lawson (right heel) and Chandler (shoulder).

"The last two or three games we've been up and down," Gallinari said. "We've had some good stretches and bad stretches, probably because we're relaxed after all these wins we've had."

Lawson, who has averaged 21.8 points in his last 18 games, and Chandler are listed as probable for Monday's game. Chandler has scored at least 23 points four times during Denver's winning streak.

Lawson had 21 points and Andre Iguodala scored a team-best 24 in the most recent matchup with New Orleans, a 113-98 home victory Feb. 1. Iguodala and Lawson combined for 40 in a 102-84 home win over the Hornets on Nov. 25.

Denver will also be trying to match its franchise-best seven-game road win streak from Nov. 28-Dec. 15, 1975, its final season in the ABA. Though the Hornets (24-46) are 14th in the Western Conference, they're also riding their first win streak since the All-Star break.

After losing 12 of 15, New Orleans beat two teams in playoff position - Boston and Memphis - for those victories. Robin Lopez had 23 points, including four in the final 1:11, in a 90-83 win over the Grizzlies on Friday.

"When you have a guy like Robin Lopez, the way he played tonight, it's huge. If he does that consistently, I think we can be a different team for sure," guard Greivis Vasquez said of Lopez, who totaled eight points in his previous two games.

The Hornets had lost six of nine at home before those back-to-back home victories, but they prevailed 94-92 in the most recent visit from Denver on April 4 when Eric Gordon hit two free throws in the final seconds.

Hornets snap Nuggets' 15-game win streak

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Even Brian Roberts couldn't believe the performance he delivered to help end Denver's 15-game winning streak.

Starting for only the second time, the rookie doubled his season high with 18 assists, Ryan Anderson scored 23 points and the short-handed New Orleans Hornets beat the Nuggets 110-86 on Monday night.

"It's crazy to fathom, having 18 assists," Roberts said. "Guys play years and don't have that many assists. Somebody pointed out I had more assists than they had as a team. For me to come out in my second start and do that is just a testament to my teammates making shots."

And to Roberts' work ethic, too. He never had 10 assists in four years at the University of Dayton, where he was more of a scorer than a facilitator. Then he spent five years trying to make an NBA roster before hooking on with the Hornets last summer, re-working his game to become a pass-first player.

Eleven of those passes turned into assists in the first half alone against the Nuggets, who finished with four fewer assists than Roberts. He became the 20th rookie to have 18 assists or more and the first since Darren Collison did it for New Orleans in 2010.

"I've had to grind and just fight to be on the team just to make an opportunity for myself," Roberts said. "It's something I know I don't take for granted. But without my teammates making shots, it's not even a discussion."

Anderson was 5 of 11 on 3-pointers, and the Hornets sank 14-of-25 3s overall. Darius Miller, starting in place of injured shooting guard Eric Gordon, was 4 of 5 behind the arc and had 16 points as seven Hornets scored in double figures.

New Orleans won its third in a row and was in control all the way. The Hornets led by nine at the end of the first quarter, by 21 at the half and by 18 entering the fourth.

Danilo Gallinari had 24 points for the Nuggets, who were without starting point guard Ty Lawson (right heel injury) for the third consecutive game. Denver lost for the first time since Feb. 22 against Washington after matching its 1969-70 ABA team's record of 15 straight victories.

"We played a bad game and they played a great game," said Nuggets point guard Andre Miller, who had nine points and six assists. "We were constantly taking the ball out of the basket and getting frustrated. Our game plan was to trap the ball, and their point guard found the open man. They outplayed us and outworked us at both ends."

The Hornets answered every Nuggets run, the last of which closed the gap to 96-84 when Kenneth Faried hit a tough bank shot and was fouled with 6:07 left. New Orleans' Anthony Davis followed with two free throws, Darius Miller drained a face-up 3-pointer and Davis leaped high to jam in a rebound follow, extending the lead to 103-84.

The closest Denver came in the second half was 67-58 after a 16-4 spurt midway through the third quarter. But the Hornets' Roger Mason Jr. immediately hit back-to-back 3-pointers, and New Orleans was up by double digits the rest of the way.

This one was never close.

The Hornets went ahead 25-11 in the first quarter, getting back-to-back, wide-open 3-pointers from Anderson to cap the early run against the sluggish Nuggets. No one picked up Anderson, who led the NBA in 3-point baskets last season, when he shot from straightaway on the first one. Denver left him unguarded again as he made another 3 the next time down the court.

The Nuggets' winning streak was well on its way to ending.

"We didn't really talk about that too much," Roberts said. "We had a lot of stuff going on in here in this locker room, so we didn't want to worry about streak busting or anything like that. We just wanted to come out and play together."

Denver missed Lawson, who had averaged 21.8 points in his last 18 games, much more than New Orleans missed starting point guard Greivis Vasquez or Gordon.

"He's important to us because he makes everyone else fit," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "These last three games we were thinking we are better than we are. It's human nature."

Wilson Chandler returned for the Nuggets after missing two games with a left shoulder injury and finished with 11 points. Faried added 13 points.

Gordon, who is tied for the team lead with 16.5 points per game, sat out with a sore left ankle. Vasquez sat out with a sprained left ankle after starting the first 70 games.

Roberts, who added 13 points for his first double-double, and Miller, who was 6 of 7 from the floor, excelled in their absence.

"A lot of times this year we've let teams come back after we got ahead of them," Darius Miller said. "We didn't want to do that tonight. They went on a great run and had us on our heels a little bit, but we bounced back."

Most of Miller's baskets came off of passes from Roberts.

"It doesn't happen if he (Roberts) doesn't work hard," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "He works his tail off."

NOTES: Nuggets reserve guard Julyan Stone left with a hyperextended right knee injury in the first half and did not return. . The Hornets started a big week of home games. They face the Los Angeles Clippers and former New Orleans point guard Chris Paul on Wednesday, and the Miami Heat on Friday. The Heat extended their winning streak to 27, beating Orlando on Monday. . A sign of the Nuggets' lack of aggressiveness: They picked up their first foul in the second quarter at the 3:49 mark and their first foul of the third quarter with 3:08 left.

THE FACTS: The Denver Nuggets' 15-game winning streak came to a halt in one of the unlikeliest of places Monday night, as the New Orleans Hornets rolled to a 110-86 win.

The Hornets (25-46), the second-worst team in the Western Conference, did it by starting three rookies due to injuries. Eric Gordon and Greivis Vasquez sat with ankle issues and watched as Brian Roberts dished out 18 assists, Darius Miller went 6-for-7 for a career-high 16 points and Anthony Davis had 14 points and six rebounds. Ryan Anderson led the way with 23 points.

Denver (49-23) led only once, after Kosta Koufos tipped in a missed shot. After that, the game was all New Orleans. The Hornets' lead never shrank below nine points after Anderson hit one of his five 3-pointers with 8:30 to play in the second quarter. New Orleans kept the league's third-highest scoring team to 86 points by forcing bad or contested shots, allowing the Nuggets to shoot only 37.9 percent for the game. And when Denver was missing, New Orleans was scooping up the loose ball, outrebounding the Nuggets by 12.

The Hornets also made the Nuggets pay for turning the ball over, scoring 22 points on 14 turnovers. Nearly everyone helped for New Orleans. Anderson went 5-for-11 from 3-point range. Roger Mason Jr. added 14 points, hitting f4-for-5 on treys.

Denver's troubles began before the game even began as point guard Ty Lawson was deemed out for the third game in a row with a right heel strain/contusion. The man who started in his place, Andre Miller, finished with only nine points and six assists in 39 minutes. Danilo Gallinari had a game-high 24 points, the lone bright spot for a Denver team that must turn around and play at San Antonio on Wednesday night.

QUOTABLE: "When you lose Greivis and Eric and you're already missing Jason [Smith] and Austin [Rivers], it's pretty bleak when you look at it on paper. We always talk about competing every night because you never know. Some guys step up and have career nights against a team that's playing better than anybody except for Miami."

THE STAT: 14-for-25 ? that's what the Hornets were from 3-point range, a scorching 56 percent from behind the arc. The Nuggets are allowing opponents to make just 36.2 percent from 3-point range this season. Mason and his rookie teammate Miller were combined 8-for-10 from that range.

TURNING POINT: The Nuggets' Miller hit a layup with 6:55 to go in the first quarter cutting New Orleans' lead down to 10-8. That's as close as the Nuggets would be the rest of the night. New Orleans ran off a 15-3 run in the next three minutes that for all intents and purposes was all the Hornets would ultimately need.

QUOTABLE II: "I think a lot of these last three games we played were human nature. We win some games, we think we're a little bit better than we are. We're human beings; we're feeling good. This league has a way of humbling anybody who doesn't have the right karma or the right approach to playing basketball."

HOT: New Orleans' Miller had started only one game previously. But he took advantage of his second start, going 6-for-7, including 4-for-5 from 3-point range for a career-high 16 points. He also had three rebounds and one assist, steal and block each.

NOT: Denver's bench didn't help the team much, going a combined 10-for-33 in the game. Wilson Chandler and Corey Brewer took the bulk of those shots but couldn't find their rhythm.

NOTABLE: The Nuggets shot 39 free throws to New Orleans' 15. ... Denver's 31 made free throws tied a season high for the club. ... The Hornets outscored the league's best team in the paint 44-38. ... Roberts, the New Orleans rookie, recorded his first career double-double (13 points, 18 assists). The 18 assists is a season-high for New Orleans. ... The Hornets tied a season-high with 10 blocked shots.
