Atlanta Hawks coach Larry Drew wants to see a better defensive effort from his team down the stretch.

Facing the cold-shooting Milwaukee Bucks could help.

The visiting Hawks look for a sixth win in their last seven meetings with the Bucks on Sunday when they meet for the second time in five days.

Atlanta (38-31) hits the road for four games following a 1-2 homestand that ended with Friday's 104-93 loss to Portland. The Hawks were solid on the defensive end two days earlier in a 98-90 victory over Milwaukee (34-34), but that came after yielding their most points of the season in Monday's 127-113 loss to Dallas.

Atlanta was outscored 91-66 in the fourth quarter during the homestand, including 31-17 against the Trail Blazers.

"We've got to get back to that blue-collar mentality with our defense," Drew said. "We've got to get back to an almost training camp-like attitude."

The Hawks need to make that change quick if they're going to have any chance of catching fourth-place Brooklyn and earning home-court advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Chicago and Boston are close behind, and eighth-place Milwaukee is only three games back in the loss column.

The Bucks have an eight-game cushion on the playoff cut line, but with five losses in seven games they're not putting much pressure on the three teams they're chasing.

Milwaukee is back home after averaging 84.0 points on 34.0 percent shooting in losses to Atlanta and Indiana.

Brandon Jennings and J.J. Redick shot a combined 2 for 26 - 0 for 9 from 3-point range - with six points as the Bucks had a season-low point total in Friday's 102-78 defeat at the Pacers.

"Nobody could get a shot to go down," said center Samuel Dalembert, who finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds. "Our shooting percentage was real low (a season-low 30.7 percent). Some guys had bad shooting games today and it gave Indiana opportunities to score at the other end. And the game just got out of hand."

The third quarter has been especially troublesome for the Bucks, who have 27 total points during that period in the last two games. They've been outscored by an average of 9.0 points in the 12 minutes after halftime in their past five.

Monta Ellis had 22 points on Friday, but he's totaled 19 on 9-of-29 shooting in two losses to Atlanta this season. He missed 12 of 14 field-goal attempts and finished with five points on Wednesday.

Hawks point guard Jeff Teague has been far more efficient in this season series, hitting 19 of 34 shots - including 6 of 8 from long range - and leading the team with 50 points and 20 assists.

Atlanta center Al Horford has 49 points and 26 rebounds in the two Milwaukee matchups. His go-ahead baby hook shot with 5.9 seconds left on Feb. 23 gave the Hawks a 103-102 win, spoiling Redick's Bucks debut.

Bucks center Larry Sanders, the league leader with 3.0 blocks per game, could present a big challenge for Horford and Josh Smith, but Milwaukee could again be without forward Ersan Ilyasova (hip) and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (sprained toe).

Atlanta has won four of six at Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE (AP) The Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks played a tight game Sunday befitting a pair of teams hoping to improve their playoff positioning.

With the outcome still to be decided, Al Horford and Josh Smith stepped up for the Hawks.

Horford scored 24 points to help Atlanta rally for a 104-99 victory at Milwaukee on Sunday.

Smith added 23 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks, who trailed 98-95 with 1:05 remaining. Devin Harris added 16 points and Jeff Teague finished with 14.

"It shows a lot of toughness from our team," Horford said. "It is important, obviously. They are in the hunt, like we are. We want to position ourselves in the best scenario that we can. We've done the job."

The Hawks clinched the season series as they try to move up in the Eastern Conference standings. The Hawks are currently in fifth place and would open the playoffs on the road.

Smith converted a layup with 33.8 seconds to tie it at 99. After the Bucks turned it over, Dahntay Jones was fouled. He made the first and missed the second, but Anthony Tolliver grabbed the rebound for Atlanta and called timeout.

Hawks coach Larry Drew called Tolliver's rebound the play of the game.

"Playing on the road, you have to bring a certain mentality and I thought we did that tonight," he said. "We did enough to come out with a win."

Horford was fouled with 20.1 seconds remaining and hit both free throws to give the Hawks a 102-99 lead. Monta Ellis missed a 3-pointer for Milwaukee, and Teague made two foul shots to put the game away.

Ellis scored 20 points for Milwaukee, and Ersan Ilyasova added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ilyasova was back in the lineup after missing the last three games with left hip pain.

Ilyasova said the loss was another missed opportunity for the Bucks, who are trying to move up from the eighth spot and a potential first-round playoff matchup with the Miami Heat.

"We were right there, but just had some bad turnovers at the end," he said. "We are a good team and I know we can still make a run."

Brandon Jennings, who was 4 for 15 from the field in another lackluster shooting performance, said time was running out on the Bucks to move up in the standings. Milwaukee has a tough upcoming schedule with games this week against the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"We have a lot of work to do," Jennings said. "We'll just see what happens."

Ellis led a Bucks comeback midway through the fourth quarter, making three 3-pointers to give Milwaukee a 97-92 lead with 2:45 remaining. But the Bucks couldn't hold off the Hawks.

"We didn't get discouraged on the late surge by Monta Ellis," Smith said. "We stayed focused and kept playing together. We both understand what is at stake. We just made a little bit more plays than they did."

Horford scored on a short jumper with 1 minute remaining to cut Milwaukee's lead to 98-97. Ellis missed a 3-pointer, but Larry Sanders was fouled going for the rebound. He hit one of two free throws to make it 99-97 with 44.1 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Atlanta's final rally.

Harris went to the locker room midway through the fourth quarter with an injured left foot and did not return. Drew said the Hawks would evaluate Harris on Monday.

NOTES: Bucks F Luc Richard Mbah a Moute missed his eighth straight game with a sprained toe. Coach Jim Boylan said Mbah a Moute was improving, but he did not know when he would return. ... Sanders had 12 rebounds to extend his double-digit streak to eight, the longest in his career. ... With his 3-pointer with 2:41 remaining in the first quarter, Atlanta guard Kyle Korver has hit at least one 3 in 63 straight games, fifth longest in NBA history. The longest streak belongs to Dana Barros at 89 games.

THE FACTS: Al Horford scored 24 points, Josh Smith added 23 and Atlanta outscored Milwaukee 12-2 over the final 2:00 as the Hawks took a 104-99 victory over the Bucks Sunday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Smith scored five points and Horford four in the final 2 minutes as the Hawks (39-31) overcame a brief flurry from Monta Ellis that gave the Bucks (34-35) a 97-92 lead with 2:45 left.

From there, the Hawks did not allow a field goal and forced five turnovers. Milwaukee's only two points after Ellis' third straight 3-pointer with 2:45 left came as Larry Sanders and Ersan Ilyasova each split a pair of free throws.

Ellis finished with 20 points -- 11 of them in a 1:55 span beginning with 4:40 left in the game -- but the Bucks lost their third straight.

QUOTABLE: "We switched up a couple things defensively. We went from man and played some zone and then did some switching, not knowing if it would work. We just wanted to try to make it tough on him after he got into a little bit of a rhythm and it seemed like it worked."

THE STAT: The Bucks outrebounded the Hawks, 51-36, and made three more field goals than the Hawks. But Milwaukee cost itself dearly by going just 10 of 18 from the free throw line, including two misses in the final 1:05.

TURNING POINT: Ellis' third straight 3-pointer gave the Bucks a 97-92 lead, and the Bucks got the ball back with a chance to increase the lead. But Ellis' bad pass was stolen by Smith, who then converted driving layup at the other end with 2:00 left. The Bucks committed five turnovers over the final 2:06 and did not score another field goal.

QUOTABLE II: "It shows a lot of toughness for our team. When all the momentum seemed like it was on their side we responded well and made plays when we needed to. Especially Josh. He drove to the basket a couple times to force the issue, and that was the big difference."

HOT: Horford made 10 of 16 shots, and is averaging 24.3 points per game against Milwaukee in three games this season -- nearly seven above his season average.

NOT: Brandon Jennings had 12 points and 13 assists but made just 4 of 15 shots and is now just 5 for 30 in his last two games (16.7 percent).

GOOD MOVE: After Ellis blew up for 11 points in just under two minutes, the Hawks switched to a zone defense and then went back to man-to-man but switched on picks. That helped get the ball out of Ellis' hands at key moments down the stretch.

NOTABLE: Hawks guard Devin Harris, a Milwaukee native, left early in the fourth quarter with a foot injury and did not return. ... Ilyasova returned for Milwaukee after missing three games with a hip bruise and posed 19 points and 10 rebounds. ... Sanders had 15 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks as three Milwaukee players posted double-doubles. ... Kyle Korver made 3 of 7 3-pointers and has now made a 3-pointer in 63 straight games -- the longest such streak since Reggie Miller had a 68-game streak with at least one 3-pointer in the 1996-'97 season. ... Ivan Smith did not play for Atlanta because of a sore back. ... Sanders has grabbed double-digit rebounds in eight straight games. ... The Hawks are 3-0 against the Bucks this season.
