Nuggets-Bulls Preview

The Denver Nuggets are on the verge of matching their longest win streak since leaving the ABA but have not visited an opponent with a winning record during this run.

That's what they face if they want to keep it going Monday night, taking on a short-handed Chicago Bulls team looking to tie its longest home winning streak of the season.

Denver (45-22) has won 12 in a row only once - March 10-April 2, 1982 - since joining the NBA for the 1976-77 season. The Nuggets' best ABA win streak was 15 games in 1969-70.

Their current run reached 11 on Friday, scoring nine of the final 11 points in an 87-80 win over visiting Memphis. Kosta Koufos led the way with 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Denver outscored the Grizzlies 29-14 in the fourth quarter to move into a virtual tie with them for fourth place in the Western Conference.

"You grow playing these kinds of games," said Danilo Gallinari, who had 15 points and made the tiebreaking free throws with 2:13 remaining. "You cannot grow a lot when you're blowing out a team by 20 or 30. These are the kind of games that make you improve as a team."

The Nuggets have won by an average of 12.3 points during the streak and blew out their next opponent not long before starting the run. Former DePaul standout Wilson Chandler scored 24 points and Kenneth Faried added 21 with 12 rebounds in a 128-96 rout of the Bulls on Feb. 7 at the Pepsi Center.

Denver, though, has played only four road games during this win streak and they were all against sub-.500 competition. The Nuggets haven't won on the road against a team with a winning record since beating Houston on Jan. 23. They're 15-19 away from home overall with only six victories over teams that are currently .500 or better.

They may have a good chance for another such win considering the Bulls (36-29) remain banged-up. They're still awaiting superstar Derrick Rose's return from knee surgery, and they've also been playing without forward Taj Gibson (knee) as well as veteran guards Richard Hamilton (back) and Kirk Hinrich (foot).

The Bulls had lost four of five without them before defeating Golden State 113-95 on Friday. Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer and Nate Robinson each scored 20 or more points for Chicago, which shot 51.8 percent after being held under 39.0 for four straight games.

"I do know we have pride," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We've taken a hit. We've lost some guys along the way. Our guys will battle. We know that we're short-handed. But if we have the right intensity and we do it collectively, we have a chance. And we've shown it throughout the year."

Thibodeau's team has won three straight home games, its longest win streak at the Untied Center this season other than a four-game run Jan. 21-28. The last two victories came over above-.500 teams Brooklyn and Utah.

Denver has won three straight in the series as Ty Lawson has averaged 20.0 points, including 27 in a 108-91 victory in Chicago on March 26.

Koufos has reached double figures in rebounds in a season-high three straight games and now battles Joakim Noah, who has averaged 13.3 boards over his last eight.

Iguodala's 3 lifts Nuggets over Bulls, 119-118

CHICAGO (AP) The Denver Nuggets' 12th consecutive win didn't come easily or without controversy.

While Andre Iguodala's 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in overtime will go down as the game-winning shot in the Nuggets' 119-118 win over Chicago, the Bulls feel otherwise.

"We felt like we got it stolen from us," Bulls forward Carlos Boozer said, referring to the play with 1.7 seconds left in which Chicago center Joakim Noah grabbed a shot from teammate Marco Belinelli that was on its downward path to the basket and slammed it home.

The officials initially didn't blow their whistles, but when Denver called an immediate timeout and loudly complained that it was goaltending, the referees reviewed video and disallowed Noah's bucket, sending the Bulls to their seventh loss in their last 11 games.

"If we deem the ball in its descent has a chance to score, and therefore it's in the cylinder, it's either offensive basket interference or it's goaltending, that's it," referee Ken Mauer told a pool reporter when asked about the game-deciding call.

"It's a tough play," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said, citing a similar play just before Noah's by Denver's Kosta Koufos that was not called by the officials.

"From my angle, it looked like it was a good play, it looked like the ball was short," Thibodeau said of Noah's play. "Koufos', I know was on the rim, and to me I guess we have to call the league and get an interpretation. Maybe I don't understand the rule correctly."

Noah was incensed.

"That's what is frustrating. How are you going to review that one, but you can't review the one two plays before it. ... I just know the refs are doing the best they can in those situations, but it cost us the game today, it's disappointing."

Denver coach George Karl didn't see it that way - but with somewhat of a caveat about the similar circumstances surrounding Koufos' play.

"There is no question it was goaltending," Karl said of Noah's play. "The ball was going to hit the rim. I was too far away to see the play on Kosta's tip-in shot."

Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with 35 points, Corey Brewer added 16 and Ty Lawson 13. Iguodala finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Andre Miller had 13 assists.

Nate Robinson led Chicago with 34 points, Luol Deng had 21, Belinelli scored 18, and Noah added 12 rebounds and 14 points.

It was the 12th time in the last 13 games that Denver scored 100 or more points, and marked the first time in seven games that an opponent has scored 100 points on the Nuggets.

Denver started out strong, leading by as many as 14 points at several points, but Chicago kept pushing back, with the Bulls' starters outscoring the Nuggets' starters 104-48 mismatch.

"Tonight, we were forcing it, we just didn't play well defensively," Karl said. "I'm proud of the way we stayed strong especially at the end when we were down four and made the big shots. This was a difficult mental game because we let go of a lead in regulation where we should have won it."

The Nuggets' eight-point lead with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter evaporated, and Ty Lawson's last-second jumper fell short, sending the game into overtime.

On the flip side, Karl was heartened that Denver got 71 points from its bench, including Chandler's outstanding play.

"Anytime when we bring (Chandler) off the bench we seem to get an offensive spurt," Karl said. "I think he is our most efficient offensive person on the team. He also plays some good defense."

Denver outscored the Bulls 21-20 in the first quarter and 53-45 at the half, but Chicago came back to outscore the Nuggets 28-26 in the third quarter and 60-52 for the second half.

Even though his team's 12th consecutive win didn't come easy, Karl was happy to get out of Chicago with the win.

"Nine (wins) in a row in January and now with 12, we know we can win and play anyone," Karl said. "We're building confidence. However, we're just trying to get to a number like 54 or 55 wins. We believe there is value in every game. We're just doing a nice job coming together and building confidence."

NOTES: The only member of the Nuggets who was alive the last time Denver won 11 straight games is point guard Andre Miller, who was four days away from his seventh birthday on March 15, 1983. ... Denver plays its 14th back-to-back on Tuesday at Oklahoma City before returning home to face Philadelphia (Thursday) and Sacramento (Saturday). ... Notebook: Nuggets 119, Bulls 118 OT

THE FACTS: With a controversial ending, the visiting Denver Nuggets extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 119-118 overtime victory over the severely shorthanded Chicago Bulls at the United Center Monday. A tip-in basket by Bulls center Joakim Noah with 1.7 seconds remaining that would have given the Bulls the lead was declared goaltending by the officiating crew.

Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with a career-high 35 points off the bench among six Denver players in double figures. The Nuggets bench outscored their own team's starters 71-48. Nate Robinson, starting in place of injured guard Kirk Hinrich, had a season-high 34 points for the Bulls. Chicago played without Rip Hamilton (back spasms), Hinrich (foot), Taj Gibson (knee) and Derrick Rose (ACL tear rehab). Gibson practiced with the team Monday morning and is considered the closest to returning.

Although eight players are listed playing for the Bulls Monday, Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau relied almost entirely on a six-man rotation, in part because of injuries to four key contributors. Backup rookie point guard Marquis Teague played just 3:38 and backup center Nazr Mohammed played just 4:23. Thibodeau did not play healthy subs Daequan Cook or Vladimir Radmanovic.

THE CONTROVERSY: With 46.4 seconds remaining in overtime, Denver's Kosta Koufos tipped in a shot by Ty Lawson and it appeared clear the ball was sitting on the rim when he did so. There was no call on the play and therefore no review. There was no call on Noah's basket, where he tipped a shot by Marco Belinelli before it got to the rim. A timeout was called by Denver immediately after the basket, and during that break the referees reviewed the play and called it goaltending.

QUOTABLE: "I don't understand how you can review my tip but you can't review the other one. I guess I don't understand the rule."

THE STAT: The Nuggets outrebounded the Bulls 53-42 and had more free-throw attempts and points than the Bulls. Denver was 20-for-27 from the free-throw line and the Bulls were 16-for-19.

TURNING POINT: Robinson's quick 3-pointer with 13.4 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime.

HOT: Robinson and Chandler both played lights out. Robinson was 13-for-22 from the field and 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Chandler was 13-for-21 from the field.

NOT: Andre Iguodala was just 3-for-14 from the field for 12 points, but made what became the game-winner -- a 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left just before Noah's waved off shot.

INSIDE THE ARENA: In attendance at the game Monday was Jabari Parker of Chicago Simeon and Taya Reimer from Hamilton Southeastern High School in Indiana, who Monday were named the male and female high school basketball players of the year. Both players are set to play at the April 3 McDonald's All American Game at Chicago's United Center.

NOTABLE: The Nuggets tied the team's longest winning streak as an NBA club with 12. They won 15 in a row when they were in the American Basketball Association. ... Belinelli had a season-high eight rebounds and a career-high four steals.
