Heat-Bucks Preview

Lesser teams have caused the Miami Heat some trouble lately during their astounding winning streak. The Milwaukee Bucks are clearly inferior, but they've given the Heat all they could handle over the past two years.

The Heat look to break a tie with the Bucks for the third-longest win streak in NBA history as they head to the Bradley Center seeking a 21st consecutive victory Friday night.

"I mean, that's a fourth of the season that we've won in a row," LeBron James said. "We should all be blessed to be in this position, be honored to part of such a great team."

His team's next contest could be a first-round playoff preview, considering Miami has built a 9 1/2-game lead atop the Eastern Conference while Milwaukee has an eight-game cushion for the No. 8 seed. Some might think a sweep would be a strong possibility if that series happens; after all, while the league-best Heat have not lost in their last 20 games, the Bucks are 8-12 in theirs and would fall to .500 with a loss Friday.

However, Miami (49-14) has lost four of the teams' six meetings since April 2011, and one of its wins came at home in overtime - 113-106 on Nov. 21. The Bucks (32-31) evened the season series with a 104-85 home victory Dec. 29.

Teams well below them in the standings have continued to give the Heat problems even though their win streak is now just the fourth ever to reach 20 in a single season. That's the same streak the 1970-71 Bucks had, and the only teams with longer ones were the 1971-72 Lakers (33) and the 2007-08 Houston Rockets (22).

"Throughout this whole streak and throughout this season, we've just been resilient. We've been able to win all types of games," James said after scoring 27 points in a 98-94 victory at Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Miami blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter of that game, five days after trailing early in the fourth against the last-place 76ers.

That 102-93 win came a night after the Heat needed James' late layup to beat Orlando, which owns the league's second-worst record. Miami also struggled to win home games against two of NBA's worst teams to close February, going two overtimes to defeat Sacramento after trailing in the final minutes against Cleveland.

"We don't panic no matter what's going on in the game. When you have a streak like this, you have to have some luck," said James, 11 for 30 from the field over the past two games after shooting at least 50 percent in 19 of 20.

Dwyane Wade, though, has found his groove in the latter half of the win streak. He's scored at least 20 points in a season-high 11 consecutive games, shooting 59.1 percent.

"Win 20 games in a row, it's awesome," Wade said. "You can't get around it. We're going to try to go for the next one."

That one comes against a Milwaukee team coming off back-to-back losses following a 6-1 stretch.

Brandon Jennings has totaled 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting in those defeats, but he's keyed the Bucks' success versus Miami with 22.0 points per meeting in the past five. He's averaging a league-best 11.6 assists in March.

Monta Ellis has gotten hot, averaging 26.8 points and 7.4 assists over the last nine games. However, he's totaled 23 points on 10-of-34 shooting in the season series with Miami.

His 26 points couldn't prevent the Bucks from falling 106-93 at Washington on Wednesday to drop 2 1/2 games behind seventh place in the East.

"We haven't secured anything," said J.J. Redick, who scored 16 points. "To me, I'm not going to be happy if we end up with the eight seed."

Milwaukee is giving up a league-worst 109.4 points per game this month, compared to 90.0 by Miami as defense has keyed the streak continuing.

The Heat are scoring an East-leading 103.3 per game this season but have surpassed that mark only once in eight March games.

Heat win 21st straight, beat Bucks 107-94

MILWAUKEE (AP) The Miami Heat had just watched the Super Bowl when Shane Battier delivered a speech that left quite the impression.

Whatever he said that night in Toronto, the Heat sure took off from there.

They haven't come down yet.

LeBron James and Chris Bosh each scored 28 points, and the Heat made it 21 straight wins, beating the Milwaukee Bucks 107-94 on Friday night.

Only three other teams have won 20 in a row in one season, and the Heat now trail just the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers (33) and the 2007-08 Houston Rockets (22) after moving ahead of the 1970-71 Bucks.

The Heat haven't lost since they fell at Indiana on Feb. 1, and they return Sunday to the place where this streak started two days later, back when they were a mediocre road team barely on top of the Eastern Conference standings.

"I think the biggest thing for our team was watching the Super Bowl and getting away from basketball in a sense and just enjoying each other," Dwyane Wade said. "We got the famous speech from Shane Battier and we've been rolling ever since."

What did Battier say?

"You had to be there," Bosh said. "It was after watching the Super Bowl. It was a good game, we had a great time. I guess the main focus was that you're going to miss me when I'm gone."

Bosh laughed.

"It was not so much about him," he continued. "He tied in everything. He tied in life to the Super Bowl. It was just everything. It was a good time."

It's been nothing but good times for the Heat ever since, although there was a scary moment for them in this game.

That was when Wade walked to the locker room with what the team said was a neck strain after crashing to the court in the early going. The Heat overcame that and led by as much as 17 in the third quarter, then withstood a push by the Bucks to keep the streak going.

Bosh hit from all angles and was 12 of 16 in the game, nailing two 3-pointers. He even converted a four-point play that made it 67-53 about five minutes into the third quarter.

James was his usual dominant self, and Wade finished with 20 points as the Heat avenged a loss at Milwaukee in late December. There's a chance these two teams could meet in the first round of the playoffs, and Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings basically said bring it on.

"I still don't take anything back about playing Miami in the first round," he said afterward as he kept his eyes on North Carolina State's ACC tournament game. "I still think we match up well against them. We just had an off night tonight."

Ersan Ilyasova led Milwaukee with 26 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. Jennings scored 21 but was 6 of 15 from the field, and the Bucks shot just over 37 percent. Monta Ellis struggled, finishing with seven points after scoring 26 in the previous game at Washington, and the Bucks dropped their third straight.

Larry Sanders got ejected for the second straight game with 2:44 left after he was called for a foul against James and picked up two technicals.

Despite all those issues, the Bucks cut the lead to 85-79 with 8:53 remaining when J.J. Redick nailed a 3 and Ilyasova hit a free throw after Battier got called for a loose ball foul. Battier then answered with a 3 and Bosh hit a runner to get the lead back up to 11 after Ilyasova's 3-pointer rimmed out.

The Heat got a major scare when Wade crashed to the court after Sanders blocked his layup.

He took a shot to the head from Sanders' hip on the follow through and landed hard. Wade stayed down as play went the other way and was tended to for about two minutes underneath the basket after the game was stopped with 7:17 left in the first period.

Wade walked to the locker room and came back out early in the second. He re-entered the game with 7:45 left in the half and quickly hit two free throws and a layup.

Wade said he was examined for a concussion and never lost consciousness, although his hands went numb for a while because he smacked them when he hit the floor. They were still sore after the game.

James scored 17 in the first half, Bosh added 13 points and the Heat shot just under 54 percent on the way to a 51-42 halftime lead.

James threw down a hard dunk off a spin move late in the first quarter and drove for a one-handed reverse jam along the baseline early in the second. He also nailed several turnaround jumpers even though Marquis Daniels was all over him.

Notes: Sanders blamed his ejection on frustration and seemed to infer that the Heat get preferential treatment from the referees. "I can imagine it's hard for a referee to ref a Miami Heat game," he said. Coach Jim Boylan said he would talk to Sanders about toning down his emotions so he doesn't hurt the team. ... Milwaukee did not attempt a free throw in the first half for the second straight game but wound up hitting 19 of 21 in the second half.

THE FACTS: LeBron James scored 28 points and added 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Chris Bosh also had 28 points as the Miami Heat won their 21st straight game, a 107-94 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Friday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Dwyane Wade added 20 points as Miami (50-14) surpassed the 20-game winning streaks of Milwaukee in 1971 and the Washington Capitols spanning the end of the 1947-'48 season and the start of the 1948-'49 season. Only the Los Angeles Lakers (33 straight in 1971-'72) and the Houston Rockets (22 straight in 2008) have longer winning streaks.

Ersan Ilyasova had 26 points and 17 rebounds, but the Bucks (32-32) lost their third straight game after winning six of seven.

QUOTABLE: "I don't remember much from when I was doing it, but when I watched it I saw his hip hit me in the head and I went down fast. Luckily I was able to come back in here [the locker room] and the doctors made sure I was fine."

THE STAT: For the second straight game -- not surprisingly, both losses -- the Bucks did not attempt a free throw in the first half. That led to some frustration as Ilyasova was hit with a technical foul after being slammed across the arm with no call with 27 seconds left in the second quarter, and coach Jim Boylan was hit with one 15 seconds into the third quarter after Monta Ellis went hard to the hoop with no call.

TURNING POINT: Wade went to the locker room with 7:20 left in the first quarter. When he returned with 7:45 left in the second period the score was tied at 34. He scored the next four points to start a 12-2 run and the Heat never led by less than six the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "I've been in the right place at the right time. I've been on the right teams at the right times. I'm very fortunate and blessed to have unbelievable teammates and guys who care about winning. That's all it is."

HOT: Bosh did the great majority of his damage from outside. Of his 12 field goals, eight were from at least 18 feet, with two of them being 3-pointers. He finished 12-for-16 from the field, 2-for-3 on 3-pointers.

NOT: The Bucks have five players averaging double-figure scoring. Other than Ilyasova's 10-for-20 shooting, the other four -- Ellis, Brandon Jennings, J.J. Redick and Mike Dunleavy -- combined to go 13-for-39.

GOOD MOVE: After the Bucks pulled within 85-79 in the fourth quarter, Wade drove the lane and kicked it out to a wide open Battier, whose 3-pointer started a 10-2 run that put the game out of reach.

BAD MOVE: Sanders was hit with two technicals with 2:44 left for his fourth ejection of the season and his second in as many games. He also was ejected Wednesday night in a 106-93 loss at Washington after giving each of the three referees a sarcastic thumbs-up with 2:45 left in that game.

ROOKIE WATCH: Bucks forward John Henson saw some time guarding James -- not with great success -- but was a factor on the offensive boards in the first half with three, including a tip-in.

NOTABLE: Marquis Daniels started in place of injured Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (toe) mostly for defensive reasons -- to guard James -- but scored the Bucks' first eight points. ... The Bucks ended the Los Angeles Lakers' 33-game winning streak in 1972. If the Heat continue winning, the Bucks would meet them in Miami on April 9 with a 33-game winning streak. ... The game marked the Bucks second sellout of the season. The other also was against the Heat on Dec. 29. ... The Heat was whistled for just two fouls -- one offensive -- in the first half.
