There aren't many adjectives remaining to describe the Miami Heat's franchise-best winning streak that has helped them grab the NBA's best record and a commanding lead atop the Eastern Conference.

The Philadelphia 76ers haven't had much good come from a regular-season meeting with the Heat in quite some time.

Miami hits the road Wednesday night looking to become just the fourth team in NBA history to win 20 consecutive games in a single season by earning a 14th straight regular-season victory over Philadelphia.

The Heat (48-14) have overtaken San Antonio for the league's best record and are up on New York and Indiana by 9 1/2 games in the East thanks to their run over the last five-plus weeks.

They beat Atlanta 98-81 on Tuesday to extend the streak to 19 games, during which they've won by an average of 11.5 points.

Dwyane Wade scored a game-high 23 points while LeBron James added 15, seven rebounds and seven assists for Miami, which in the opener of its five-game trip can join the Los Angeles Lakers (33 in 1971-72), Houston (22 in 2007-08) and Milwaukee (20 in 1970-71) as the only teams to win 20 straight in the same season.

"Let's be honest, guys," James said. "This is an unbelievable streak that we're on. We're playing great basketball. We're winning in different phases of the game, we're playing different styles. We've won every game - on the road, at home, double-overtime games, end-of-regulation games - whatever the case may be."

Miami has beaten the 76ers twice during its winning streak and has won 13 straight regular-season meetings by an average of 12.5 points. James recorded a triple-double and Wade finished with a game-high 33 points in a 114-90 road win Feb. 23.

James then had 25 points and 10 rebounds while Wade added 22 points in Friday's 102-93 victory, helping overcome 25 points from Thaddeus Young.

Philadelphia (24-39) has dropped 12 of 14 and is 8 1/2 games back of Milwaukee for the East's final playoff spot, but Spencer Hawes scored a season-high 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added seven assists in Monday's 106-97 home win over Brooklyn.

The Sixers held off a fourth-quarter rally to snap a five-game losing streak.

"That's been our deal all year - we get going but lose our focus when we let them back in it," Hawes said. "We were able to sustain and that was the best 48-minute game we played in a while."

Jrue Holiday, who has 30 points and 19 assists in this season's two meetings against the Heat, added 15 points and 11 assists Monday. He's averaging an NBA-worst 3.9 turnovers per game, but he committed only one while six players scored in double figures.

"It really does make life a lot easier (when players are hitting shots)," said Holiday, who has 54 assists in his last five games.

The Sixers shot 52.6 percent against Brooklyn - their third-best mark of the season.

"The quality of our shots have been better," coach Doug Collins said. "I attribute that to moving the ball and trying to play a bit quicker rather than running the clock and dribbling so much."

Miami has won 17 of the last 18 meetings, including its five-game victory in the first round of the 2011 playoffs.

Heat streak at 20 after 98-94 win over 76ers

PHILADELPHIA (AP) LeBron James missed once, then again, whiffing on two easy looks at the rim that could have left Miami shaken.

Like a good teammate, Dwyane Wade swooped in for the saving tip, preserving the lead and keeping the Heat's amazing win streak rolling.

James scored 27 points and the Heat became the fourth team to win at least 20 consecutive games in a season, beating the Philadelphia 76ers 98-94 on Wednesday night.

Against a struggling Sixers team that was revved up like a playoff game, the Heat just found a way to win.

And when it was done, they took the time to admire their mark.

"Twenty is special," Wade said. "Win 20 games in a row, it's awesome. You can't get around it. We're going to try to go for the next one."

Wade scored 21 as the Heat needed big baskets over the final 2 minutes to top the Sixers for the milestone win. He stuck with the ball on James' misses and scored the clutch tip that made it a three-point lead with 29 seconds left and squashed the Sixers' upset bid.

"It shows you he, like many of our guys, are just willing to make winning plays at the end," coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Only three teams have won at least 20 consecutive games in the same season: the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers (33), the 2007-08 Houston Rockets (22) and the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks (20). The Washington Capitols also won 20 straight, spanning the end of the 1947-48 season and the start of the 1948-49 campaign.

James and the Heat have started to acknowledge just how special this winning streak is in a season that has them running away with the Eastern Conference.

They opened a five-game road trip as 8 1/2-point favorites over the slumping Sixers, a team they've defeated three times during the streak. They beat Atlanta on Tuesday for streak win No. 19, then made the flight to Philadelphia that put them in just before dawn.

"You get sleep when you can and do your job," center Chris Bosh said.

Maybe fatigue played a bit of a role in Miami's inability to truly put away the Sixers. Led by Thaddeus Young, the Sixers opened the third quarter on a 16-8 run that helped slice the lead to four. Miami led 71-66 at the end of the quarter.

The Sixers hung around in the fourth, too. Dorell Wright hit a 3-pointer to make it a six-point game and he followed with a steal and fast-break dunk to cut it 82-78. Sixers fans coming to see a slice of history were suddenly rooting for history denied. Philadelphia's fans started going wild to the "make some noise" sign on the video board and started singing the catchy anthem, "1-2-3-4-5-Sixers!"

Jrue Holiday brought them back with a 3-pointer for an 83-82 lead with 5:26 left and had fans chanting, "Beat the Heat!"

Ray Allen silenced them with a big 3 in front of the Sixers' bench for an 89-86 lead. Bosh scored to make it 91-89.

It wasn't enough, at least not yet. Holiday, the All-Star point guard, showed no fear of the moment when he dunked on a leaping James for the tying bucket.

James came right back made one of two free throws for a 92-91 lead. Holiday dribbled the ball into Bosh's leg, then off his own foot, leading to Wade's tip after James missed twice at the rim. James drove from beyond the arc and missed from the right side, he put up his own rebound off the back of the rim, and Wade slid in underneath two Sixers defenders for the bucket.

"I miss two gimmes and D-Wade was able to tip `em home," James said. "It was just great of him not giving up on the play and putting us up."

The Heat escaped with a scare - and No. 20.

"When you have a streak like this, you have to have some luck," James said.

Unless they wear down, there's no reason to think the Heat can't keep the streak going toward 33. The rest of the road trip includes games at Milwaukee, Toronto, Boston and Cleveland.

"We just think about winning the next game and we'll see where it takes us," James said.

Young had 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Sixers. Holiday had 21 points and Evan Turner scored 15.

"At the end, we just couldn't come up with that one rebound," coach Doug Collins said. "I thought we executed, got some shots at the end, and just couldn't quite find a way to get over the top."

Fans in Heat jerseys dotted the arena and dozens packed the baseline three rows deep snapping pictures of Miami's pregame drills. James wowed them with some around-the-back reverses that served as a sneak peek for what was ahead.

James, the reigning MVP, turned the second quarter into his own dunk contest. It helped that he didn't have any competition.

With flair, James threw down thunderous dunks about every time he touched the ball. His best came on a reverse he brought between the legs that had the sellout crowd of 20,398 "Oooohhhh!" in amazement. His dunk capped a 17-2 run that put the Heat up 10 and helped them cruise toward a 51-39 halftime lead.

But the first half wasn't all about James' dazzling dunks. The Heat had 14 assists on 19 baskets and Shane Battier came off the bench to hit a pair of lead-stretching 3-pointers. It's the kind of teamwork that has the Heat rolling.

"You have to have a unique group that are willing to sacrifice, a unique group willing to keep perspective of what we're playing for and not get caught up in all the noise outside," Spoelstra said. "There are so many distractions, not only in this league, but everyday life."

Spoelstra could talk to Heat president Pat Riley on how to handle the distractions that come with a record winning streak. Riley played for the Lakers team that won 33 straight games. But while the two talk daily, Spoelstra said Miami's streak hasn't been discussed. Not once.

Thanks to a fantastic finish, they'll have another day to bring it up.

Notes: New Eagles coach Chip Kelly had a lengthy chat outside the locker room with Spoelstra before the game. Kelly had previously made a pregame visit with Collins. ... The Heat have beat the 76ers 14 straight times. ... The Heat missed 15 of 20 3-pointers.

THE FACTS: The streak continues.

LeBron James scored 27 points, Dwyane Wade added 21 points and the Miami Heat won their 20th consecutive game with a hard-fought 98-94 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. Ray Allen contributed 12 points while Chris Bosh and Chris Andersen had 10 each. The Heat's 20-game winning streak is tied for the third-longest in NBA history. The Lakers won 33 in a row in 1971-72, the Houston Rockets won 22 straight in 2007-08 while the Milwaukee Bucks (1970-71) and Washington Capitols (1948) also won 20 straight. The Heat improved to 49-14 and 19-11 on the road.

Thaddeus Young led the Sixers with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Jrue Holiday had 21, Evan Turner 15 and Dorell Wright 13. The Sixers fell to 24-40 and 18-17 at home.

THE STAT: The Sixers are 5-16 when the opponent records 25 or more assists. The Heat had exactly 25.

TURNING POINT: After Holiday tied the game at 91 with 1:20 remaining, the Heat responded by closing out the game on a 7-3 run. James hit 1-of-2 free throws, Wade had a huge basket and the Heat were able to pull away from the feisty Sixers.

HOT: Wade was 7-for-14 and Anderson was 5-9. Young knocked down 11 of his 20 shots for the Sixers.

NOT: Shane Battier was 2-for-6 while Philadelphia's Royal Ivey struggled by missing all three of his shots.

QUOTABLE II: "We just don't panic. Our main goal is to win a game not to blow a team out. Whatever the case may be, we just want to play the game. Wherever the game takes us in those 48 minutes, we're ready for it."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: James was stellar once again with 27 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot. Holiday had a strong game as well, going for 21 points, seven assists, seven rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot.

INSIDE THE ARENA: From the opening tip to the final buzzer, the sellout crowd of 20,398 was buzzing inside the Wells Fargo Center. Down the stretch, the fans inside the arena were as loud as they have been all season.

QUOTABLE III: "I don't think there was any pressure on us. Those guys were on the streak and we were trying to end it."

GOOD MOVE: The Heat struggled with their shooting at times as evidenced by a 5-for-20 effort from beyond the arc. They stayed aggressive and kept attacking the basket in the waning minutes and it paid off in another victory.

BAD MOVE: There wasn't much more the Sixers could have done on this night. They got the shots they wanted at the end. It just wasn't enough against the hottest team in the league.

ROOKIE WATCH: Heat forward Jarvis Varnado was inactive. For the Sixers, forward Arnett Moultrie was scoreless in 5:21.

NOTABLE: The Heat have won 14 consecutive regular season games against the Sixers. ... The Sixers have lost 13 of their last 15 games. ... Young registered his third straight double-double and his 18th of the season after compiling just one all of last season. Young also had 16 points in the third quarter, the most in any quarter by a Sixer this season. ... Holiday has scored 20 or more points 24 times this season after accomplishing the feat 10 times last season. ... James is averaging 22.7 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in three games against the Sixers this season. ... The Heat are an NBA-best 13-0 since the All-Star break. ...
