Nuggets-Suns Preview

With Ty Lawson leading the way, the Denver Nuggets are on the verge of matching their longest win streak of the season.

The Nuggets will seek a ninth consecutive victory Monday night while trying to avenge a road loss to the Phoenix Suns from earlier this season.

Already playing at a high level over the past month, Lawson tied his best scoring performance of the season in a 111-88 rout of Minnesota on Saturday. His 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting, including a 4-for-4 effort from 3-point range, boosted his scoring average to 24.2 over the last 13 games.

Lawson has shot 53.5 percent in that stretch, also averaging 7.7 assists and making 24 of 58 (41.4 percent) from beyond the arc.

"I think he has a lot of confidence, especially on his outside shots," teammate Danilo Gallinari said. "When he has that kind of confidence, I think it's tough to play defense against him because he's quick too and he can find the outlet. He's been playing great for us."

With Lawson's help, Denver (42-22) has topped 100 points in 22 of its last 23 games and scored at least 104 in each of the past nine contests. The Nuggets are averaging 111.3 points on 52.7 percent shooting during their win streak, bolstered by 24.5 fast-break points per game.

"We've all been playing better in the second half of the season and our record is showing that," Lawson said. "The first half of the season, there were worries in management, coaching staff if we were going to make the playoffs, but we've gotten into shape and we've been playing well."

The team's 18-4 surge, which began with a nine-game win streak from Jan. 20-Feb. 9, has put Denver within striking distance of one of the top four spots in the Western Conference.

"We've been looking to play this way since the beginning of the season, and we've been working on it, but I think we still have a lot of room to improve," Gallinari said.

The Nuggets are seeking their fourth straight road win after starting 11-19 away from home.

A visit to Phoenix (22-41) may help, but Denver lost 110-100 there Nov. 12 in its only previous matchup with the Suns this season. That defeat snapped the Nuggets' six-game win streak in the series.

Phoenix's Goran Dragic had 21 points to lead seven Suns players in double figures in that win, going 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Dragic scored 18 on Saturday in a 107-105 victory over Houston as Jared Dudley had a team-best 22 points and seven assists off the bench.

The Suns have won three of four at home after losing eight of their previous 10 in Phoenix.

"I think that trying to create winning culture is the focus now," swingman P.J. Tucker said. "As we get close to the end of the season where we are probably not going to make the playoffs, now we try to win as many games as we can and keep progressing as a team and as an organization."

Lawson is averaging 20.3 points on 62.2 percent shooting along with 9.7 assists in his last three games in Phoenix, but he was limited to 12 points and eight assists in the November loss there.

Koufos-led Nuggets beat Suns for 9th straight win

PHOENIX (AP) The longest active NBA winning streak by a team not from Miami reached nine games when the Denver Nuggets beat the Phoenix Suns on Monday night.

Kosta Koufos scored a career high 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting, mostly from point-blank range, Corey Brewer added 20 and Ty Lawson 19 in the Nuggets' 108-93 victory.

Denver's nine in a row is just half of Miami's 18 straight, but it's good enough to have the Nuggets putting pressure on the top teams in the Western Conference. The Nuggets trail the Los Angeles Clippers by just two games for the third-best record in the West.

As usual, the Nuggets did it with an array of layups and soaring dunks.

"Once we get running and getting into our groove, we're tough to beat," Brewer said. "It's all about playing defense. Once we get stops and make them miss, we can run."

Denver had 74 points in the paint to Phoenix's 32. The Nuggets, who lead the NBA with 57 points in the paint per game, topped 70 for the eighth time this season.

"Seventy-four points in the paint. That sums up the entire game," Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter said. "They dominated us driving the ball. They are a good team and we did a good job of staying close but they just tightened the screws and pulled away from us."

Wesley Johnson scored 18 and Marcus Morris had 16 for the Suns. Hamed Haddadi scored a career-high 13 for Phoenix.

The Nuggets return home to face the Knicks on Wednesday night in Carmelo Anthony's first game in Denver since leaving for New York.

Denver led throughout the second half, but the Suns stayed within striking distance until the Nuggets finished the game with a 16-8 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes.

"I think we ran more in the second half," Koufos said. "Our guards did a great job of penetrating the lane and dishing off and we give them credit for that and that's why we're so good this year, because our guards are so fast and they can penetrate."

Denver overcame an off shooting night for Danilo Gallinari, who was 1 for 8 from the field for five points. Koufos also had 10 rebounds.

Coach George Karl said Koufos "has a great understanding of how to get underneath a defense when the defense makes mistakes."

"He's ready to get a pass and he hustles and gets hustle rebounds," Karl said. "He probably had three or four put backs tonight. He's gaining confidence by doing the little things of playing basketball and I really enjoy it."

Neither team led by more than seven points in the first half, despite Denver's 38-16 advantage in points in the paint.

A 13-1 Phoenix run erased a 35-30 Denver lead and put the Suns up 43-36 on Michael Beasley's 19-footer with 5:19 left in the half. But the Nuggets outscored the Suns 17-7 the rest of the quarter to lead 53-50 at the break.

Denver scored the first six of the second half, the first four on fast-break layups by Lawson and Koufos, to go up 59-50 after Kenneth Faried's two free throws with 10:50 to go in the third.

The closest Phoenix got after that was 72-70 on Jared Dudley's 3-pointer with 3:10 left in the period. Layups by Brewer and Lawson boosted the lead to 76-70 and Denver led 80-74 entering the fourth.

The Nuggets took their first double-digit lead at 86-76 when Brewer made one of two free throws with 8:44 to play.

Moments later, JaVale McGee's huge dunk on a lob from Brewer made it 88-79, then Lawson's fast-break dunk after a turnover put Denver up 90-79 with 6:26 remaining.

"I think we're being understanding and responsive," Karl said. "I still get disappointed in our first-half performances but we make second half adjustments and come out with the right attitude. We're young in a lot of ways but we're also very good in a lot of ways, too."

Denver's nine-game streak matches its season best. The Nuggets' last loss was Feb. 22 at Washington.

THE FACTS: Kosta Koufos had the first 13 points of the game for Denver and finished with a career-high 22 as the Nuggets pounded the Phoenix Suns for 74 points in the paint and rolled to their ninth straight win, 108-93 Monday.

Corey Brewer had 20 points and Ty Lawson had 19 points and six assists as the Nuggets, who have averaged 111 points during this winning streak, continued to pile up the points with a balanced scoring attack. They have now won four straight on the road and go home where they are 29-3 and go for their 14th straight win at Pepsi Center on Wednesday -- when Carmelo Anthony makes his long-awaited return to Denver.

Wesley Johnson had 18 points, and Marcus Morris had 10 of his 16 in the first quarter for the Suns, who had won four of their last six but couldn't keep pace with the Nuggets without centers Marcin Gortat and Jermaine O'Neal. Hamed Hadaddi came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points and add eight rebounds in 18 minutes, but the Suns ran out of gas in the fourth quarter as Denver pulled away.

THE STAT: The Nuggets now have bookend nine-game winning streaks during a run that has seen them win 19 of the last 24 games.

THE STAT II: Denver scored 108 points while making just three of 13 3-pointers. But a team that averages a league-best 57.4 points in the paint put up 74 against the Suns -- 22 of them coming on the fast break.

TURNING POINT: After the Suns pulled to within two points at 72-70 on a Jared Dudley 3-pointer with 3:10 left in the third quarter, the Nuggets held Phoenix to just six points over the next seven minutes to open a double-digit lead.

HOT: Koufus had Denver's first 13 points of the game -- all from three feet and closer -- and made 10 of 11 shots from the floor during his career-high scoring night of 22 points.

NOT: Goran Dragic had another subpar offensive night, missing six of nine shots and scoring just eight points in his 36 minutes.

NOTABLE: Shannon Brown, banished to the bench for most of Hunter's tenure as interim coach, made a surprise appearance in the second quarter. After 10 straight DNP's, Brown played eight minutes and had two points.
