A record-setting performance from Deron Williams has the Brooklyn Nets gaining some confidence.

The timing may be ideal with the Atlanta Hawks sputtering.

Williams looks to build on one of the best shooting displays in NBA history Saturday night as the Nets try to stay hot by winning in Atlanta for the first time in more than four years.

Since sitting out two games with ankle tendinitis, Williams is averaging 23.8 points on 48.0 percent shooting - 53.0 from beyond the arc - over the last nine contests. That's an improvement from his season average of 17.8 points, his lowest production since managing 16.2 with Utah in 2006-07.

The point guard continued his impressive play Friday, setting an NBA record with nine 3s in the first half and finishing with a season-high 42 points as the Nets (36-26) coasted to a 95-78 win over Washington. Williams ended up with a team-record 11 3-pointers, one shy of the league mark shared by Kobe Bryant (2003) and Donyell Marshall (2005).

"Deron, he was hot like fish grease," forward Reggie Evans said. "He was hot, so he kind of kicked it off and we just kept it going throughout the game."

Williams wasn't close to being that effective at Atlanta on Jan. 16, going 5 for 18 from the floor - 2 for 9 from behind the arc - to finish with 12 points with nine assists in a 109-95 loss in the first game of a home-and-home set.

Brooklyn won 94-89 two days later behind Williams' 24 points.

Now, the Nets are trying to win in Atlanta for the first time since Nov. 15, 2008. They've dropped eight in a row there while surrendering an average of 109.4 points.

Joe Johnson should be eager for a better performance at Philips Arena after he managed 15 points in the January trip, shooting 4 for 15 while missing all four chances from long range in his first visit to Atlanta since being traded to Brooklyn last summer.

Johnson, who spent the past seven seasons with the Hawks (34-27), is trying to get back on track after matching his season low with six points against the Wizards.

While Brooklyn is going for a three-game winning streak, the Hawks are hoping to win for the 12th time in their last 15 games in this series after falling for the fourth time in five contests, 107-102 in overtime at Boston on Friday.

"I think the story of the game for us was turnovers down the stretch," Al Horford told the NBA's official website after Atlanta gave it away three times in OT. "I think that they just killed us. We can't turn the ball over. We have got to get a shot every time."

Horford had 22 points and 13 rebounds - he's averaged 23.6 points in his last 12 games - while Josh Smith had 32 points, nine assists and eight boards after averaging just 13.0 points in his first four games this month.

Smith has scored 23.8 points per game on 60.3 percent shooting over his last four home meetings with the Nets. However, he missed the most recent one while serving a one-game team suspension for detrimental conduct due to an incident at practice.

He had 12 points in the matchup in Brooklyn, while Horford sat out with a hamstring injury after putting up 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds Jan. 16.

The Hawks are 18-5 when Horford scores at least 20 points and 15-20 when he scores 19 or fewer. He's also missed three games.

Lopez, Blatche lead Nets past Atlanta, 93-80

ATLANTA (AP) P.J. Carlesimo believes if the Brooklyn Nets maintain this kind of effort, they can keep moving up the Eastern Conference standings.

"That's as good a game as we've played all year considering it was a back-to-back and how important a game we felt this was for us," the interim coach said. "From the point we were down 10, or whatever we were, we can't play much better."

Brook Lopez and Andray Blatche each scored 18 points, Deron Williams added 17 and the Nets won their third straight game with a 93-80 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.

Al Horford finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, who seemed lethargic after losing in overtime at Boston on Friday. Atlanta has lost two straight and five of six.

Brooklyn had a better performance coming off its 17-point home victory over Washington on Friday in which Williams set the NBA record with nine 3-pointers in a half and scored a season-high 42 points.

Lopez, who finished with nine rebounds, scored 14 points in the third, including a runner that gave Brooklyn its first 20-point lead.

"My shots started falling," Lopez said. "That was a focus for me at halftime. I got good looks, and guys like Joe (Johnson) and Deron set great screens for me. We really wanted to try to attack the basket and open up the floor for us."

The Hawks began the game with an 11-1 lead, and the score was tied after the first quarter, but they bottomed out from there.

Horford declined to use the loss at Boston as an excuse for Atlanta's low energy level.

"All the teams are dealing with it," Horford said. "I think we had a little carry-over from the game last night. We fought very hard in Boston, and I think we started out OK, but we couldn't maintain that rhythm."

It doesn't get any easier for the Hawks, who visit the Eastern Conference-leading Miami Heat on Tuesday before hosting the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday.

"We have a tough task ahead of us," Horford said. "We have to regroup and go to Miami."

The Nets took their first double-digit lead midway through the second quarter when Mirza Teletovic's 3-pointer made it 39-29. It only got worse in the second half for Atlanta, which trailed by 23 early in the fourth on a couple of long jumpers by Blatche.

Atlanta came within 13 midway through the fourth on John Jenkins' 3-pointer, but C.J. Watson followed with a 3-pointer and Blatche's fadeaway jumper made it 89-71.

Johnson, the former Hawks guard, returned for the second time with Brooklyn to Philips Arena, scoring just eight points on 4-for-13 shooting. He was lightly booed every time he touched the ball in the first three quarters.

The Nets, who snapped an eight-game losing streak in Atlanta, have improved to 37-26 and are 2 1/2 games from second place in the East.

"When we're that focused and play with that much attentiveness as we did tonight - not much energy - we can be a really good basketball team," Carlesimo said. "We were a really good basketball team tonight. It's one game, but that's really, really encouraging."

Notes: Brooklyn F Reggie Evans finished with six points and nine rebounds in 23 minutes despite playing with swelling in both eyes. Carlesimo said before the game that Evans was scratched in both eyes against Washington. He had 11 points and a career-high 24 boards Friday. ... Carlesimo improved to 23-12 since Avery Johnson was fired. ... Hawks C Zaza Pachulia missed his fourth straight game and 10th in the last 21 with a sore right Achilles. ... Pachulia is listed as day-to-day. ... With Lopez in the lineup for Brooklyn, Johan Petro started at center. Petro, who has played in only 21 games this season, scored 10 points in the first quarter but did not take another shot.

THE FACTS: Atlanta's eight-game home winning streak against the Nets was shattered Saturday, and Brooklyn didn't need a fabulous performance from Deron Williams or anyone else in a 93-80 win over the lead-legged Hawks.

Brook Lopez and Andray Blatche scored 18 points each, and Williams -- who shot 11-for-16 on 3-pointers while scoring 42 points in Friday's win over the Wizards -- added 17.

Like Atlanta, Brooklyn (37-26) played Friday but only the Hawks looked weary as the Nets doubled them up 28-14 in the second quarter to take over what had been a tie game. Williams was 2-for-7 on long balls Saturday as the Nets won their third straight.

One night after playing hard only to lose in overtime in Boston, Atlanta trailed 51-37 at halftime, and never pulled closer than 11 points and trailed by as many as 23.

After losing for the fifth time in six games, Atlanta (34-28) is alone in seventh, 2.5 games ahead of eighth-place Milwaukee -- and staring a game Tuesday in Miami.

Al Horford had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, but that was well below his 23.6-point average over the previous 12 games, and point guard Jeff Teague scored just seven after averaging 26.5 over the previous two.

QUOTABLE: "Both teams played last night, but we were lucky in that our game was over early and [the Hawks] had to play into overtime on the road. That was a big advantage for us."

THE STAT: 20-8 -- The Nets had 12 steals (to Atlanta's three) and outscored the Hawks 20-8 in points off turnovers to offset similar statistics in several categories.

The Hawks actually had one more rebound than Brooklyn, shot 41.6 percent to the Nets' 43.4, made just one less 3-pointer, were even in points in the paint, had one more second-chance point, and outscored the Nets 18-7 in fast break points. Atlanta, though, had 17 turnovers to Brooklyn's nine.

TURNING POINT: Tied at 23 after one quarter, the Nets seized this one in the second quarter and their bench and Atlanta's turnovers made the difference.

As Brooklyn outscored Atlanta 28-14, subs Keith Bogans (six points), Blatche (four), C.J. Watson (four) and Mirza Teletovic (three) outpaced the Hawks' bench 17-4. The Nets' third straight victory was cemented as they scored nine points off five Atlanta turnovers in the period, and the Hawks did not score off a Brooklyn turnover.

The Nets did it with the long ball as Bogans made a pair of 3-pointers in the period, Teletovic hit one and so did Williams.

Atlanta missed all three 3-pointers in the quarter, and shot just 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) in the period.

After jumping out to an 11-1, the Hawks were outscored 50-26 over the remainder of the first half.

QUOTABLE II: "We made shots. We did a good job moving the ball. We got in transition and got some easy baskets. [Then] we kind of ran out of gas throughout the remainder of the game."

HOT: With a battery of half hooks and post moves, Lopez scored 12 points in the third quarter on 6-for-9 shooting. . . . Joe Johnson and Blatche each had four steals for Brooklyn. . . . Blatche shot 9-for-11.

NOT: Teague missed all five of his shots in the first half, going scoreless. . . . Former Hawk Johnson missed all five of his 3-point tries, and in two games this season in Atlanta he's 0-for-9 from distance. He scored eight points Saturday, and is 8-for-28 overall in the two games in Atlanta. . . . Hawks subs DeShawn Stevenson and Anthony Tolliver went scoreless in a combined 27 minutes.

BAD MOVE: Taking down center Johan Petro didn't work for Atlanta. He scored 10 points in the first quarter while making his second straight start, and the Hawks were tied at 23 with Brooklyn. He played just 2:33 in the second quarter, when the Nets ran away, and Hawks coach Larry Drew did not start him in the second half.

NOTABLE: With Zaza Pachulia missing his fourth straight game because of a sore right Achilles' tendon, the Hawks are compromised as they head into a stiff schedule. Beginning with Tuesday's game at Miami, the Hawks will not have more than one day off between games until after their April 6 game at San Antonio -- a stretch of 16 games.

QUOTABLE III: "Without Zaza out there, we wanted to go down low some more. He's a big part of what they do defensively filling up the lane."
