Nets-Bobcats Preview

Though the slumping Brooklyn Nets kicked off a road-heavy stretch in disappointing fashion, a visit to Charlotte could help them bounce back.

Hoping to avoid a fifth loss in six games, Brooklyn tries for a sixth consecutive win over the NBA-worst Bobcats on Wednesday night.

The Nets (34-26), whose 33 home games are tied for the most in the league, will be spending most of the next four weeks in opposing arenas. Brooklyn finds itself in the midst of a stretch of 12 of 15 on the road, capped by a season-high eight-game trek March 18-April 3.

"I don't like it," interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "I'd much rather the schedule was more balanced and we didn't have the circus in for whatever it's in for. A lot of teams go through this at different stages of the year. Some teams are fortunate they schedule away from the playoffs, and it really helps them. We're far from the lone rangers. A lot of teams go through this. Ours is coming at a bad time. You don't want it to happen in March."

The Nets are coming off Saturday's 96-85 loss at Chicago, having committed 21 turnovers - one off a season high - while letting the Bulls shoot 52.1 percent. Brooklyn has lost four of five while averaging 88.8 points, 6.2 below its season mark.

"Until we can play consistently for more than a three or four-game stretch, until we can play consistently on the road, particularly now, in March, this is what we're gonna be," Carlesimo added. "We just have to tighten it up. We have to play a lot better, and we have to do it soon."

In an effort to change things up, Carlesimo plans to play All-Star center Brook Lopez and fellow big man Andray Blatche together more often. The Nets have gone 14-6 when Blatche, who averages 10.0 points, scores at least 13.

"I think it's a good strategy," said Deron Williams, averaging 22.2 points over the last six games. "With the way things have been going lately, it doesn't hurt to try. We pick and roll with those guys, now (teams) have to worry about two people instead of one. That opens things up for not only me, but the rest of the team."

The Nets have to like their chances of bouncing back against the Bobcats (13-47), who have dropped 20 of 22 at home and been outscored by an average of 10.2 points during a five-game losing streak in this series. Lopez had 26 points and 11 rebounds as Brooklyn cruised to a 97-81 victory Dec. 28 in the teams' only matchup this season.

Charlotte, which has dropped seven straight by 22.1 points per game, saw its woes continue with Monday's 122-105 loss at Portland. The Bobcats shot a season-worst 10.0 percent (1 for 10) from 3-point range while the Trail Blazers hit a season-high 59.8 percent from the field.

"We have to stick with our principles," swingman Gerald Henderson said. "It's tough to lose every night, but we've got to stay positive, keep our attitudes right, and continue to try and get better, practice-by-practice and game-by-game."

Leading the team with 17.3 points per game, Kemba Walker is averaging 12.3 on 29.1 percent shooting over the last four games.

Charlotte has lost 26 consecutive games when Walker scores 16 points or fewer. He was held to five on 2-of-10 shooting versus Brooklyn in December.

Starting forward Byron Mullens only played three minutes Monday after suffering a knee injury, leaving his status for this game unknown.

Williams, Johnson lead Nets over Bobcats, 99-78

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) The third quarter has been the Brooklyn Nets' Achilles heel of late.

However, on Wednesday night it proved to be their saving grace.

The Nets shrugged off a sluggish first half and turned a 10-point halftime deficit into a 99-78 blowout win over the Charlotte Bobcats, reminding everyone they still have the ability to flip that switch.

Deron Williams had 20 points and eight assists, Joe Johnson added 22 points and the Nets limited the NBA-worst Bobcats 25 in the second half on 10-of-40 shooting. Brooklyn outscored Charlotte 28-9 in the third quarter.

"We hit shots and got stops in the second half, that was the main thing," Williams said. "We had some good looks in the first half but we just didn't knock them down."

Brooklyn (35-26) remains in the thick of Eastern Conference playoff race but needed a win to regain some momentum after losing four of its previous five games, including the previous two.

This was an expected win, but a needed win for the Nets.

They have a lengthy road trip later this month, so there's a belief in the locker room that every win they can get now will be important as they look ahead to the playoff seeding. They came in tied for the fifth-best record in the conference.

"It was good for us to get a win and bounce back," Williams said.

The Nets trailed by 53-43 at the half, but opened the third quarter with a 21-6 run led by Williams and Johnson, and never looked back. The Bobcats managed just nine points in the third quarter on 3-of-19 shooting and were outscored 56-25 in the second half to lose their eighth straight game.

Reggie Evans grabbed 16 rebounds and Brook Lopez had 16 points and five rebounds for the Nets.

"It was passion, not effort," said Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo. "We didn't play with near the same passion that we did in the second half. Reggie was, I thought, unbelievable, not just in rebounding but the effort on the splits and the helping. Brook was contesting shots. Our guards did a much better job in the second half."

Rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 17 points and Ben Gordon added 16 for the Bobcats, who are 6-43 since starting the season 7-5.

It was almost as if the Bobcats didn't bother showing up for the second half.

Kemba Walker, Gerald Henderson and Gordon were a combined 4 for 21 from the field in the second half.

"It felt like a darn lid was on the rim," Henderson said. "You know you can't win in this league if you can't score."

Said Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap: "We had some good looks but we let (the missed shots) bleed into our defensive intensity. The cheap buckets for us are free throws. But we have to do a better job of creating that with our penetration game."

Williams, who had a career-high 57 points in his last appearance at Time Warner Cable Arena last season, scored 13 points in the second half and Johnson added 16 to lead the comeback.

Williams knocked down a 3-pointer with 6 minutes left in the third quarter to put the Nets ahead for good at 62-59. He's averaging 20 points per game over his past five games.

Still there is room for improvement for the Nets, who committed 24 turnovers.

"I've never seen so many travels called in my life," Williams said. "It must have been a point of emphasis tonight or something."

For a while it looked like the Nets might be in for another long night.

Charlotte hit nine of its first 12 shots, including two dunks by Bismack Biyombo, to build an early 18-6 lead. But Brooklyn cut the lead to three after three straight 3-pointers on three possessions, two of those by Keith Bogans.

Things got a little testy midway through the second quarter when Gordon tripped Gerald Wallace as he was heading up the court on a fast break.

Gordon was whistled for a foul, but Nets assistant coach Mario Elie was slapped with a technical after arguing that Gordon should have been called for an intentional foul.

NOTES: Kris Humphries appears to have completely fallen out of the Nets' rotation. The high-priced forward didn't even play against the Bobcats. ... Hall of famer Nate "Tiny" Archibold and Eric "Sleepy" Floyd attended Wednesday night's game. ... Walker, who has been hot of late for the Bobcats, had 10 points and eight assists in the loss. ... Gerald Wallace had a season-high five blocks.

THE FACTS: Joe Johnson scored a game-high 22 points while Deron Williams added 20 as the Brooklyn Nets scored a 99-78 come-from-behind win over the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 17 points to lead the Bobcats who have now dropped eight straight and 43 of their last 49 games.

QUOTABLE: "We really couldn't get anything going in the first half. We had open looks and we got confused by their zone early. We came out with a better rhythm and definitely turned up the defensive intensity. We took a step in the right direction tonight. Hopefully it continues to click for us out there."

THE STAT: Brooklyn dominated the second half against Charlotte. The Nets held the Bobcats to just 25 points and 25.0 percent shooting (10-of-40) while scoring 56 points and connecting on 64.7 percent of its shots (22-of-34). Brooklyn also had its way on the glass with a 31-11 edge in rebounding in the second half. The Nets also made 53.8 percent of its three pointers and made five of six free throw attempts.

TURNING POINT: Brooklyn opened the second half on a mission. The Nets scored 16 of the first 19 points in the second half to turn a 10-point deficit into a lead it would never relinquish. Williams and Johnson each five points in the 16-3 burst including a Johnson bank shot to close out the run.

HOT: Williams scored 20 points and dished out eight assists while grabbing four rebounds. It was his fourth game of 20 or more points in the last five against Charlotte. Williams is averaging 23.0 points in the last five while averaging 5.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds.

NOT: Kemba Walker leads the Bobcats in scoring at 17.2 points per game, but had struggled over the last five games. Walker is averaging 11.8 points on 29.8 percent shooting (20-of-67) during that span while Charlotte has lost all five of those games by an average of 25.2 points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Johnson had a game-best 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and added five rebounds and three assists on the night. Johnson is slowly returning to form after being sidelined the final three games of February due to a sore left heel. He scored 11 in each of the first two games back from injury.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Eric "Sleepy" Floyd of nearby Gastonia, NC and former Georgetown guard was in attendance at Time Warner Cable Arena. Also in attendance was NBA Hall of Famer Nate "Tiny" Archibald. Derek Jeter was also in town taking in the Bobcats and Nets game.

GOOD MOVE: Brooklyn coach P.J. Carlesimo made a good switch late in the first quarter to keep the game from getting away early. Charlotte jumped out to a 10-point lead early and Carlesimo brought in Keith Bogans and Mirza Teletovic which keyed a 17-4 run to close the quarter and bring the Nets within three after one period.

ROOKIE WATCH: Kidd-Gilchrist led the Bobcats in scoring Wednesday with 17 points and added five rebounds and two steals. He's averaging 14.7 points and 6.3 rebounds in his last three games. Fellow Charlotte rookie Jeffery Taylor had no points in eight minutes of action. Mirza Teletovic had three points off the bench in 14 minutes of action while Tyshawn Taylor scored two points in his two minutes of action and Tornike Shengelia played but did not score.

NOTABLE: Ben Gordon scored in double figures for the second straight game and the 32nd time this season. Walker scored in double figures for the eighth time in nine games and 54th time this season. Gerald Henderson scored in double figures or the 14th time in 16 games and 35th time this season. Reggie Evans of the Nets recorded double-figure rebounds for the fifth time in six games. He is averaging 11.5 rebounds over the last dozen games. The Nets have registered six 20-point victories on the season. The six wins are four more than they had in their previous three seasons combined. Gerald Wallace, who was the face of the Bobcats franchise, returned to Charlotte and recorded a season-high five blocked shots. Charlotte forced a season high 25 turnovers.
