The Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz decided to keep their leading scorers at last week's trade deadline. That decision has so far paid more dividends for one team.

With help from Josh Smith, the Hawks will seek a sixth win in seven games and fourth in a row Wednesday night against the Jazz, who will try to avoid a third straight loss.

Atlanta (32-23) was reportedly in trade talks with Milwaukee for Smith, who is averaging 17.3 points, before Thursday's deadline, but it ultimately declined to make a deal even though the forward will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end.

"We weighed the positives and negatives of each of our opportunities and at the end of the day we felt like the best decision was to stand pat based off some of the things we were looking at," general manager Danny Ferry said.

The decision so far has looked like the right one as Atlanta has solidified its hold on a playoff spot with its recent surge. Smith and Al Horford each had 23 points in a 114-103 victory over Detroit on Monday, leading Atlanta to a season-high fourth straight road win.

Horford also matched a career high with 22 rebounds, and Jeff Teague had 20 points and 12 assists as the Hawks scored at least 100 for the eighth time in nine games. They had reached the century mark in only seven of their first 17 of 2013.

"We just have to keep trying to play well and try to win as many games as we can," said Horford, whose team is 2-0 on its season-high six-game trip. "Our stretch only gets tougher. We're not trying to look ahead, but we know what our schedule is."

While the Hawks have thrived with Smith still on the roster, the Jazz (31-26) have dropped back-to-back games since deciding to keep Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap. Jefferson, averaging 17.6 points, and Millsap (15.1 ppg) have expiring contracts.

"We decided the incumbent position was the strongest now and going forward," general manager Dennis Lindsey said. "We'll see if we're right or wrong."

The Jazz, who are seventh in the Western Conference, erased an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to visiting Boston on Monday but fell 110-107 in overtime. Reserve Gordon Hayward had 26 points - one shy of matching his season high - in his third game back from a sprained shoulder, but he was the only Utah player with more than 16.

"I think we take this as a learning experience. We played hard. We competed, but we fell short," Hayward said. "We've just got to be better."

Utah will try to avoid its first three-game losing streak since Dec. 26-30, but a matchup with Atlanta might not help. The Hawks have won six of seven meetings and in each of the past two visits to Salt Lake City.

Former Jazz guard Devin Harris scored a season-high 24 points in a 103-95 victory in Atlanta on Jan. 11, and was one of six Hawks in double figures. Randy Foye led Utah with 25 points, his second-best scoring performance of the season, while Jefferson had 23 and Millsap scored 20.

Horford leads Hawks past Jazz 102-91

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) With an array of jumpers and layups, Al Horford put on a scoring clinic.

He saved his best for the fourth quarter.

Horford scored 16 of career-high 34 points in the final period and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Josh Smith added 24 points 14 rebounds and seven assists to help the Atlanta Hawks hold off a fourth-quarter rally by the Utah Jazz in a 102-91 victory Wednesday night.

"We worked too hard to give it up," Horford said. "It was one of those things where you don't want to lose, so you kind of do whatever you have to do.

"We just kept fighting and I kept fighting."

Jeff Teague had 19 points and seven assists for Atlanta, helping the Hawks win their fourth straight game over Utah and move to 3-0 on their current road trip.

Horford made it possible with his big fourth quarter that snuffed out several Jazz rallies late in the game.

"He was good," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "We were running plays through him. When the shot wasn't there, he was passing the ball. He got everything within our offense. Guys were doing a good job of finding him. He's really playing at a high level now - an extremely high level."

Al Jefferson led Utah with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Derrick Favors had 17 points and 15 rebounds. It wasn't enough to prevent the Jazz from losing their second straight home game and third straight contest overall.

Atlanta took control when the Jazz opened the second half by missing their first eight shots. The Hawks went on a 10-2 run and took a 66-50 lead on a pair of free throws by Horford.

The Hawks appeared to be on the verge of securing a blowout road victory when they extended their lead to 80-60 on a pair of free throws from Zaza Pachulia with 1:24 remaining in the quarter. But the Jazz finally came to life on offense toward the end of the third quarter, going on an 11-2 run that culminated in a three-point play by Favors to cut the Hawks' lead to 82-71.

Still, Utah was left with far too much ground to make up in a short amount of time.

"We've got to be able to pick it up in the third," Jazz guard Gordon Hayward said. "We can't be flat like we were. Hopefully, we can change that in the next game."

DeMarre Carroll kept the Jazz within striking distance late into the fourth quarter. Carroll twice helped Utah cut the lead to eight - first on a 3-pointer and then on a steal that he fed to Favors for a dunk that trimmed Atlanta's lead to 92-84.

The Hawks held the Jazz in check down the stretch, however. Horford made a pair of baskets to put Atlanta back up by 12. Then, Smith hammered home a dunk after Favors hit a pair of free throws to cut it to 96-89 in the final minute.

"We just kept digging and kept playing hard," Smith said. "Anytime they went on a run, we tried to silence them with a layup or a big shot."

The first quarter played out with Smith and Jefferson trading baskets. Smith made a hook shot to spark a 10-3 run and capped it with a dunk that gave Atlanta an early 18-11 lead. Jefferson helped rally the Jazz by making four straight baskets. The final one, a double-pump short jumper, left the Hawks clinging to a 27-25 lead with 20.5 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Jefferson tallied 11 points in the quarter, while Smith finished with 10.

Atlanta built the lead back up early in the second quarter, extended the advantage to 39-30 as Horford made three baskets over a 3-minute span. Utah answered with a 9-0 run - capped by a driving layup from Alec Burks - to tie it at 39.

Horford and Teague combined to score 11 points in the final 2:30 of the first half to help Atlanta take a 56-48 lead going into the locker room.

"We had good shots," Favors said. "They were just going in and out. Overall, we needed to get our energy up."

NOTES: Favors started for the Jazz after Paul Millsap did not dress because of a sprained ankle. It was just the 14th game Millsap has missed in seven NBA seasons. ... Randy Foye made his 129th 3-pointer of the season, tying the Jazz single-season franchise record set by Mehmet Okur in 2006-07. ... Atlanta has won five consecutive games, scoring more than 100 points in each. The Hawks are 24-7 this season when they surpass 100. ... Devin Harris had 12 points and two assists in his first game in Utah since being traded to Atlanta in the offseason.

Notebook: Hawks 102, Jazz 91

THE FACTS: The Atlanta Hawks are feeling right at home on the road.

The Hawks picked up their fifth straight road victory by easily handling the Utah Jazz 102-91 on Wednesday night. Al Horford continues to terrorize opponents -- and make All-Star Game selectors look foolish. He scored a career-high 34 points and had 15 rebounds to lead the Hawks.

Josh Smith also demoralized the Jazz as he had 24 points and 14 rebounds. Jeff Teague added 19 points and seven assists for Atlanta, which has won six of its last seven games.

During the Hawks' five-game road winning streak they've won by an average of 11.8 points and scored an average of 106.4 points.

Al Jefferson had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, who lost their third straight game. Derrick Favors, starting in place of an injured Paul Millsap, had 17 points and 15 rebounds.

THE STAT: The Hawks controlled tempo throughout the game. They ran when they wanted to and prevented the Jazz from doing the same. Atlanta had 20 fast-break points, compared to just seven for Utah.

TURNING POINT: The Hawks were in control for much of the first half, and then put the game away with a dominant stretch to start the third quarter. They opened the second half on a 10-2 run to go ahead 66-48. There wasn't anything flashy about Atlanta's spurt as Teague sank a running jumper, Horford had one of his powerful dunks and the rest of the team's points came from the free-throw line. The real damage was done on defense, as the Hawks kept the Jazz from getting to their spots and doing what they wanted. They held Utah to 36.8 percent shooting in the third quarter.

HOT: Horford is playing like one of the league's elite players right now. Prior to his outstanding effort against the Jazz, he had 23 points and 22 rebounds against Detroit on Monday, and he sank the game-winning basket against Milwaukee on Saturday. In his last seven games, he's averaging 25.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and shooting 68.1 percent. He usually shoots well when he plays the Jazz as he entered Wednesday's game shooting 59 percent against them. He shot 63.6 percent on Wednesday.

NOT: Utah's point guard situation continues to be a problem. Earl Watson again started in place of Jamaal Tinsley -- who got a second straight DNP-CD -- and committed three turnovers in 19 minutes. Alec Burks, playing out of position in a backup point guard role, shot 2-for-8 while committing three turnovers in 28 minutes. Utah also continues to start games slowly. The Jazz allowed Atlanta to shoot 60 percent and score 30 points in the first quarter. Marvin Williams, who played in 487 games for the Hawks, didn't do much to cause them any trader's remorse. He had eight points on 4-for-10 shooting in 19 minutes.

GOOD MOVE: Atlanta gets more attention for its offense, but the team's defense was a deciding factor against the Jazz. The Hawks simply refused to get beat near the basket and secured the paint against Utah's bigs. They allowed the Jazz to have open looks at the basket, and Utah had little success in knocking them down. It was excellent strategy for the Hawks, who limited Utah to below 50 percent shooting in each quarter and 44.6 percent for the game. Horford punctuated Atlanta's defensive effort with a block on Jefferson with 4:48 remaining as Utah was gaining momentum.

BAD MOVE: The Jazz seemingly would have learned some lessons after two straight disastrous third quarter performances. Instead, they had their third straight that cost them another game. They played with little energy after the break and missed good looks at the basket. On Utah's first 10 possessions in the third quarter, the Jazz shot 0-for-9 and committed two turnovers. The Jazz, who eventually heated up late in the period, were outscored 26-18 in the third quarter. They were outscored 36-20 in the third by the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday and 32-19 by the Boston Celtics on Monday.

NOTABLE: Millsap did not play. It was the first game he's missed this season. He suffered a sprained left ankle early in Monday's loss to Boston, had it re-taped and struggled in the second half. His status is day-to-day. The Hawks improved to 24-7 when they score more than 100 points. Three former Jazz players -- Kyle Korver, Devin Harris and DeShawn Stevenson -- faced Utah on Wednesday. Harris made the biggest impact, scoring eight of his 12 points in the first half and dishing two assists. Korver had an off-shooting night, even in warm-ups. He was 1-for-4 for four points. Stevenson played 13 minutes and scored two points. Utah's Randy Foye tied the franchise record for most 3-pointers in a season. He had two against the Hawks, bringing his season total to 129. Utah's bench outscored Atlanta's 29-9. The Hawks have defeated the Jazz four straight times.
