Riding a season-high win streak, the front-running Miami Heat are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the Eastern Conference.

The Chicago Bulls, meanwhile, are just looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this month.

The Heat are on the verge of their first nine-game winning streak in a year, but they'll have to defeat the Bulls on the road in the regular season for the first time in almost three years Thursday night.

Miami (37-14) has built a five-game lead on second-place New York in the race for the East's top seed, and the club is showing every indication it can widen the gap further as it bids to repeat as NBA champion.

The Heat have won eight games in a row, averaging 107.6 points on 51.4 percent shooting - 39.8 from behind the arc. They last won nine in a row from Feb. 10-March 1, 2012.

A superb fourth quarter Wednesday got them closer to matching that run. Miami opened the final period by scoring the first 13 points to erase a 10-point deficit and outscored Atlanta 40-17 in the final 12 minutes of its 103-90 win.

"We don't win games in 12, 24 minutes, 36 minutes," All-Star forward LeBron James said. "We've got to take 48 minutes. It was a good test for us coming out of the break.

"It took us a little while to get into our offensive rhythm."

The Heat tend to struggle offensively with the Bulls (31-22), scoring 91.0 points per game while dropping six of the last eight regular-season meetings, including a 96-89 home defeat on Jan. 4. They've lost nine of the past 11 visits to Chicago, last winning during the season on March 25, 2010, but did win twice at the United Center in the 2011 conference finals.

James has averaged 32.6 points over his last 17 games there - including the playoffs - and he scored 30 against them Jan. 4.

It seems likely he'll be in for another strong performance since he's averaging 31.0 points on 67.2 percent shooting while sinking 15 of 30 from long range to spur the eight-game winning streak.

Chris Bosh may be looking for some improvement after making 2 of 10 from the field to finish with six points and six rebounds against the Hawks. He was better against the Bulls last month, getting 14 points and five boards.

Chicago is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 28 and 30 after emerging from the break to beat New Orleans 96-87 on Tuesday.

"We all needed a little break," said forward Carlos Boozer, who had 17 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. "(We needed to) get away from it, get rejuvenated, get recharged, especially mentally. Obviously, physically, too. We had a lot of guys who were banged up. Some of us are still banged up, but we're playing through it."

The Bulls are still hoping to have Derrick Rose back from last season's left knee injury in time for the stretch run to the playoffs.

Boozer, though, feels they're doing just fine.

"We're a complete team," he said. "We've got great players at each position."

Boozer happens to be one of them, and he managed 27 points and 12 rebounds in the latest meeting with the Heat. However, he's averaged 12.3 points and 9.5 boards over the last four home matchups - all Bulls wins.

Luol Deng, the team leader with 16.8 points per game, had only six last month versus the Heat after going 2 for 9 from the floor.

CHICAGO (AP) Just in case the message isn't getting through, the Miami Heat are more than happy to repeat it. The championship still is in their hands and good luck trying to pry it away.

The Heat won their season-high ninth straight Thursday night with an 86-67 win over the Chicago Bulls behind LeBron James' 26 points, and supplied more evidence that they're ready to put away the rest of the Eastern Conference.

More important, they're looking like a team that's poised to defend their championship.

"We all had a vision of how this team was going to really operate together, but there is no limit," Chris Bosh said. "We can continue to get better. We can continue to play better together. Our defense can continue to improve. If we want to win in the postseason, it's going to have to."

They sure are looking good at the moment. They blew out Oklahoma City on the road before the All-Star break and followed it up with a win at Atlanta on Wednesday before taking out the Bulls.

James also had 12 rebounds and seven assists in another big performance after ending his franchise-record seven-game streak of scoring at least 30 the previous night.

Dwyane Wade added 17 points, and the Heat took control in the first half, sending the Bulls to their fifth loss in seven games on a night when the Derrick Rose recovery story took another twist.

After saying last week that he wouldn't rush back from his knee injury to play this season if he wasn't ready, Chicago's sidelined superstar had to go into damage control mode after his older brother Reggie blasted the organization in an ESPNChicago.com article for not making a move before Thursday's trade deadline.

Things didn't get much better for the Bulls once the game started. They set a season low for points while committing a season-high 27 turnovers, the most for the Bulls since they had 29 against Washington on Dec. 4, 2004.

"We're putting together some good basketball right now," James said. "We're defending. We're creating turnovers. We're winning the turnover game offensively. We're the best shooting team in the league ... so if we don't turn the ball over, we get good shots at the rim, we could also have a good chance to win."

Nate Robinson scored 14 points for Chicago but also committed five fouls with Kirk Hinrich sitting out because of ongoing trouble with his right elbow. That explains some of the Bulls' problems hanging onto the ball, although general sloppiness and Miami's athleticism certainly played a role.

Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Joakim Noah added 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, but he also had four turnovers.

Chicago was particularly bad in the first half, coughing it up 17 times as the Heat built a 45-35 lead, and the Bulls came up short after winning at Miami last month. This time, the Heat took control in the second quarter, scoring 13 straight points during a 4 1/2-minute stretch to turn a two-point deficit into an 11-point advantage even though James was on the bench for much of the run.

It started after a soaring right-handed dunk by Taj Gibson to give Chicago a 28-26 lead with 8:16 remaining. Allen answered with a driving layup, Wade followed with two jumpers and the Bulls turned it over five times as the Heat built a 39-28 lead.

Marco Belinelli ended the scoring drought for Chicago with a free throw, and Boozer then nailed a jumper after Bosh buried a 20-footer. But it was a rough night all around for Chicago, even before the Bulls took to the court.

Rose, recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, found himself at the center of attention after his brother went off, and he wound up releasing this statement in response: "I have always felt that the Bulls organization's goals have been the same as mine and that is to bring another championship to this city."

That comment came after Reggie Rose ripped the Bulls, telling ESPNChicago.com they don't have the talent to compete for a championship and that their decision to stand pat before the trade deadline could be a "big factor" in whether Derrick plays at all this season.

"It's frustrating to see my brother play his heart and soul out for the team and them not put anything around him," said Reggie Rose, Derrick's manager.

Coach Tom Thibodeau brushed off his comments, saying they're "no big deal.

"We all want the same things," he added. "We want Derrick's health. Obviously we're trying to pursue a championship. We share that in common."

NOTES: Hinrich sat out because of soreness in his right elbow. The veteran Hinrich missed seven games with an infection in the elbow before delivering 10 assists Tuesday in a win at New Orleans. The Bulls visit Charlotte on Friday, and Thibodeau expects him to make the trip. ... The Heat traded backup center Dexter Pittman and a second-round pick in this year's draft to the Grizzlies on Thursday for the rights to center Ricky Sanchez. ... Mike Miller remained in Miami because of ear problems resulting from a head cold. He also missed Wednesday's game at Atlanta but could be available in Saturday at Philadelphia.

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat extended their win streak to nine games with an easy 86-67 victory over the host Chicago Bulls Thursday. LeBron James had 26 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Heat to their first win in Chicago since James joined the Heat for the 2010-11 season. Dwyane Wade had 17 points for the Heat. The Bulls got 14 points from Nate Robinson, who started at point guard in place of injured guard Kirk Hinrich. Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls.

THE FACTS II: The Bulls had their season low in points and the 67 points was also the least number of points scored by a Miami opponent this season. The Bulls got no closer than seven points in the second half and trailed by double digits from the 10:43 mark of the fourth quarter to the end of the game.

QUOTABLE I: "We had a couple of Miami Heat huddles. Everyone yelling and screaming. I love it."
-- Miami coach Erik Spoelstra, saying his team remained competitive despite the big lead it held for most of the game.

THE STAT: The Bulls had 26 turnovers for the game and shot 33.3 percent (13-for-39) in the second half. The Heat had 17 turnovers and still easily won the turnover battle.

THE STAT II: The Heat shot 50.7 percent in the game, as James went 11 for 15 from the field.

TURNING POINT: The score was tied 22-22 after one quarter and the Bulls' last lead was at 28-26 with 8:16 left in the second quarter. The Heat scored the next 13 points and it was never much of game after that.

INJURY UPDATE: Bulls guard Hinrich was held out of the game due to soreness in his right elbow. He had an infection in the elbow that caused him to miss seven games before playing in Tuesday's win at New Orleans. The Bulls are 2-6 in the last eight games Hinrich has missed.

INJURY UPDATE II: Miami guard Mike Miller missed his sixth straight game due to an ear infection. Although he was not with the team in Chicago, Miami coach Spoelstra said there has been no decision yet on whether Miller can join the team in Philadelphia for their game Saturday. LeBron limped out of a collision with Robinson with 7:19 left in the fourth quarter but never left the game.

HOT: Besides James' hot night, Chris Bosh of Miami was five for nine from the field for 12 points. Norris Cole made four of six shots off the bench for the Heat.

NOT: Luol Deng was 3-for-12 from the field for the Bulls. Key bench contributors Jimmy Butler and Marco Belinelli combined to go zero for seven.

QUOTABLE II: "Miami is rolling. They are playing great. If you have a bad two or three minutes of play, you're going to crush yourself and that is what we did tonight."

GOOD MOVE: Despite the late start caused by the national television broadcast, the Heat made relatively quick work of the Bulls, which could help them get out of town before the brunt of the winter storm hitting the Chicago area overnight.

QUOTABLE III: "We came out of a timeout with seven minutes to go and up 14. We said to each other 'We have to take it over now'. We didn't want them to get back into it."

INSIDE THE ARENA: Prior to the game, TNT commentator and former Bull Steve Kerr came out of his pre-game meeting with always taciturn Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau and told the reporters gathered outside "He gave us great stuff." Then he laughed.

ROOKIE WATCH: Bulls guard Marquis Teague got extended minutes in the absence of Hinrich combined with the fact that starting point guard Nate Robinson was in foul trouble the entire game. Teague had six points and five rebounds in 19 minutes but had no assists and four turnovers.

NOTABLE: The last time the Heat won a game in Chicago during the regular season was March 25, 2010... the Bulls previous high in turnovers this season was 22 (they had 27 Thursday)... Joakim Noah had 11 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, three steals and two blocks, marking the first time he reached each of those minimum statistics in the same game... TNT broadcaster and former Miami Heat coach Jack Ramsey celebrated his 88th birthday at the game.
