OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) LeBron James is playing at a record-setting level, and that only makes Kevin Durant want to get better at his own game.

Heading into the All-Star break, James is making the race for league MVP a one-man contest. He has grabbed all the headlines by logging an NBA record six straight games with at least 30 points while shooting 60 percent or better.

By comparison, the three-time NBA scoring champion Durant has hit both of those marks just five times all season. The two top vote-getters in last season's MVP balloting will play Thursday night when Durant's Oklahoma City Thunder host James' Miami Heat.

"I always feel that I have to raise the bar for myself every single day. I think I'm competing against the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the season, throughout the season and seeing if I can be better than that," Durant said.

"Of course, LeBron James is a really good friend of mine, a big inspiration, a guy I looked up to in high school, middle school, just hearing about him when he was in high school and being the No.1 pick out of high school was a pretty big accomplishment and now the stuff he's doing now, of course he's a big inspiration. I want to get there as well, so I just got to keep working."

Besides finishing second to James in last year's MVP voting, Durant's Thunder lost to the Heat in five games in the NBA Finals. Thursday night's game will be the first time the teams have played at Chesapeake Energy Arena since the Heat won Game 2 of the Finals, then returned home to win the next three games and the title.

Miami won on its home court on Christmas Day in the only other meeting this season.

"It's really fun. I think both teams accept the challenge," said James, who has made 60 of his last 80 field-goal attempts. "Both teams also know it doesn't define the season, win, lose or draw. I think both teams want to continue to get better and end on a high note going into the break. But we're not going to put added pressure on it.

"We understand the magnitude of the game. We understand what they're going to come with and we will be ready for it."

Behind James, the Heat roll in on a six-game winning streak. Oklahoma City had also been hot, tying a franchise record with four straight wins by at least 20 points before getting blown out at Utah on Tuesday night.

The Thunder (39-13) are just ahead of East-leading Miami (35-14) in the overall NBA standings, with both trailing NBA-leading San Antonio in the race for home-court advantage for their chance to pursue the title.

"We know what it feels like to lose, to get there almost to the top of the mountain and fall off," Durant said. "We know how hard it is to get back. So we just try to prepare ourselves every single day to try to do that."

Durant, the league's best scorer the past three seasons, has set out to improve his all-around game somewhat in the mold of James. He's averaging career-bests in shooting percentage from the field (52), 3-point range (43) and foul line (90.4), plus in assists (4.4), steals (1.6) and blocks (1.2).

James' numbers are still better in all of those categories except free-throw shooting, and he's pulling down more rebounds while ranking behind only Durant and New York's Carmelo Anthony in scoring.

Yet James and Durant are hardly archenemies, spending time training together in the offseason. James has also called Durant an inspiration for him to keep getting better.

"I really appreciate that comment because people want us to hate each other so bad," Durant said earlier in the season. "That's true. People want us to hate each other. I really respect him and I really compete against him hard."

Now, there's the added motivation that it was James' Heat that kept Durant from winning his first NBA title.

"They're trying to get back and capitalize. We know that feeling. It's a little bit more passionate when you're playing the people who put you out - and we know that," said Chris Bosh, James' teammate.

"Especially being in their gym, they want to send a message and we understand that. We've got to play with high intensity."

LeBron's streak ends, Heat pound Thunder 110-100

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) With LeBron James playing at his best level yet, the Miami Heat powered into the All-Star break with a reminder to the Oklahoma City Thunder that the NBA championship still resides on South Beach.

James had 39 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, and narrowly missed extending his record-setting streak of high-scoring games combined with top-notch accuracy, as the Heat trampled Oklahoma City 110-100 in a Thursday night showcase.

James was in position to continue his NBA record run of games with at least 30 points and 60 percent shooting to seven, but missed from a couple steps beyond the 3-point line as the shot clock ran down with just over a minute left and Miami up 10.

That dropped him to 14 for 24 in the game, or 58 percent. All that mattered to him, though, was that Miami's winning streak reached a season-best seven straight games - and the Heat beat the Thunder for the sixth time in a row, dating to last year's NBA Finals.

"Winning is hard to come by in professional sports. That's what it's about," James said. "Sixty percent doesn't matter. Winning is all that matters."

Chris Bosh chipped in 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Heat, who won the last four games of last season's Finals after losing Game 1 in Oklahoma City and continued their dominance in the series after winning on their home court on Christmas Day.

"I thought we imposed our will, playing our style of basketball," said Dwyane Wade, who had 13 points and eight assists before fouling out with 3:29 to play.

"But have their number? No, we're not feeling that way. We've just won two games against them. That's it."

Kevin Durant had 40 points and eight rebounds, but missed his first seven shots as Oklahoma City fell hopelessly behind. After the slow start, he wound up making half of his 24 shots - going 8 for 10 in the fourth quarter to get Oklahoma City within 108-100 after trailing by as much as 23.

It wasn't enough to measure up against James, who beat him in last year's MVP race and then the Finals before the two won a gold medal together at the London Olympics.

"It's fun. I take on the challenge every time we're playing," Durant said. "He had a great game. He was making some tough shots, man - one-leggers, fadeaways in corners, 3s. So, you've got to tip your hat to that.

"I just wanted to keep putting pressure on him. I missed a few and then I started to hit in the fourth. I just tried to will my team back in the game, but it didn't work."

Russell Westbrook had 26 points and 10 assists, with six turnovers, for the Thunder. He had 20 points in the first half to keep Oklahoma City from getting run out of its own gym.

Despite playing without injured starting forward Udonis Haslem (leg) and then losing two starters to foul trouble in the first 6 minutes, the Heat took control by scoring 11 straight points midway through the first period and went up 28-13 when Ray Allen made the free throw after Durant drew his 11th technical foul of the season.

"That was the game, that first quarter," said Durant, who surmised that the Thunder came out too nervous or too excited. "We just kept fighting and we kept fighting, battling uphill. That's tough to do against a championship-caliber team."

Miami never trailed, held Oklahoma City to just two baskets over a 12-minute stretch and eventually widened its lead to as much as 79-56 when James put back a missed jumper by Bosh with 5:07 left in the third quarter. That matched the largest deficit of the season for the Thunder, who also were down 23 in a home loss against Brooklyn last month.

Oklahoma City fell to 23-4 at home and suffered back-to-back losses for only the second time all season - with the Heat responsible for the second loss on both occasions. The defeat also dropped the Thunder (39-14) to even in the loss column with Miami (36-14) as the two potentially jockey for home-court advantage if there's a Finals rematch.

San Antonio has the best record in the league, and is the only team ahead of Miami and Oklahoma City.

"We always have to be sharp. We can't ever let our guard down," James said. "We can't ever come in lackadaisical. We have to come in with a great mindset."

James finished the first half with a flurry, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of jumpers from the left wing on four straight possessions. He said it all started with a fan who taunted him.

"He said, `Shoot it. You can't shoot.' So, I said, `OK,' and I shot it. I made it and then I made another one and then I made another one and then I made another one, and he stopped talking to me," James said.

The first 3 came when James was left wide open, then the Thunder tried to send Durant, Thabo Sefolosha and finally Kendrick Perkins at him - all to no avail. Westbrook spent most of the second half guarding James.

The only frustration for James came because of the officials, who whistled him for two fouls within two-tenths of a second - and within the final 6 seconds of the half. James tried to restrain himself but eventually let his emotions boil over enough that Dan Crawford hit him with a technical foul, too.

Still, Miami bumped its lead to 63-46 when Bosh got open for a layup at the halftime buzzer off of a half-court inbound bounce pass from Shane Battier.

Notes: Miami had two winning streaks of six games earlier in the season. ... The Heat had shot at least 55 percent in its previous two games and were trying to do it in a third straight game for the first time in franchise history. They ended up at 47 percent, going 41 for 88. ... Oklahoma City went 21 for 22 at the foul line in the first half to keep the margin from getting even worse Westbrook was 10 for 11 and Durant went 9 for 9.

THE FACTS: LeBron James became the first NBA player to score at least 30 points in seven straight games heading into the All-Star Break since Wilt Chamberlain did it in the 1962-63 season and he led his Miami Heat teammates to a dominating 110-100 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Heat never trailed and led by as many as 23. Going back to last season's NBA Finals the Heat have beaten the Thunder in six straight games and this one was really close only at tipoff.

James finished with 39 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. He was 4-for-8 on 3-pointers many of those four coming at key moments in the game. Chris Bosh scored 20 on 10-for-14 shooting while also pulling down 12 rebounds. Dwyane Wade and Ray Allen each had 13.

The Thunder had just two players in double figures and it was the two you'd expect. Kevin Durant had a game high 40 points. He had a terrible first half shooting the ball (2-for-10) and a great second half (10-for-14). Durant almost single-handedly tried to rally the Thunder in the fourth quarter when he scored 22 points. Russell Westbrook added 26 points while handing out 10 assists. While Westbrook and Durant combined to score 66 points they also combined for 11 turnovers, six of those coming from Westbrook.

The Thunder bench managed just 16 points, nine from Kevin Martin and seven from Reggie Jackson.

Miami dominated the glass outrebounding Oklahoma City 46-35. 13 of those Heat boards came off the offensive glass. That has been a trouble spot for OKC in the past.

The Thunder outscored the Heat 31-22 in the fourth quarter to cut a 23-point deficit down to eight but Miami, and especially James, always seemed to hit the big shot just when it was needed the most.

QUOTABLE: "We kinda let our guard down there a little bit in the fourth quarter. But I was just trying to make plays for my teammates. We had a great game plan and went out and executed it."

THE STAT: Late in the third quarter Kendrick Perkins had more field goals (four) than Durant (three) that should tell you what kind of night it was for OKC. Durant got it going late but it was too late.

TURNING POINT: The Heat put it to the Thunder from the beginning with a huge first quarter then came out strong to start the second half to take away any realistic hope the Thunder might have had to come back. The Thunder trailed by 15 after the first quarter and they couldn't get the margin back into single digits until the clocked ticked under a minute to play. The Thunder tried to make a little run to close the first half but James went 4-for-4 (10 points) in the last 2:10 of the half to keep the Thunder down. OKC also made a run in the fourth quarter when Durant struck for 22 points.

QUOTABLE II: "They jumped on us early and we were playing uphill the rest of the way. We kept fighting but it was just too late. They doubled every screen and made us take bad shots. We're not as bad as what we played tonight, but I was anticipating a much better game."

HOT: Miami started 9-for-16 (56.3 percent)...Bosh hit four of his first five shots and finished the first half 6-for-7 (12 points)...James was 7-for-11 (23 points), eight rebounds and four assists in the first half...Miami had 63 points in the first half the most given up by OKC in a first half this season...Durant was 8-for-10 in the fourth quarter.

NOT: The Thunder started the game just 5-for-14 (35.7 percent) and finished the first quarter at 31.6 percent...Durant was 0-for-4 in the first quarter and went on to miss his first seven shots before finishing the first half 2-for-10...Ibaka was 1-for-3 (two points) in the first half...OKC shot 33.3 percent (12-for-36) in the first 24 minutes and was 1-for-5 beyond the arc...Miami was 2-for-9 on 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE ARENA: ESPN College GameDay co-host Kirk Herbstreit and Tampa Bay Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, a former University of Oklahoma All-American, were part of the 93rd straight sellout inside Chesapeake Energy Arena.

GOOD MOVE: Spoelstra said before the game, "We have to play with a great sense of urgency and focus." His team responded by opening the game with stifling defense. OKC got off to its worst start this season shooting just 31.6 percent and trailing 32-17 after the first quarter. The 15-point deficit is the deepest hole the Thunder have been in after any first quarter this season.

BAD MOVE: Brooks was asked before the game if he would alter his lineup and go small tonight. He said he hadn't "thought one bit about that." Over the first eight minutes of the game though, Bosh had his way with Perkins going 4-for-5 and scoring eight points. The Thunder also gave up 10 paint points to the Heat over that same time.

NOTABLE: While James continued his streak of 30 point games his streak of games shooting 60 percent or better ended tonight. After missing a long three late in the game James finished at 58.3 percent...OKC is now 23-4 at home this season, three of those four losses have come against Eastern Conference teams.
