After cooling off the NBA's hottest team in their last game, the Boston Celtics will try to extend their winning streak against the team with the league's worst record.

The Celtics look to win their eighth game in a row since All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo went down on Monday night when they visit the Charlotte Bobcats, losers of seven straight.

Boston (27-23) appeared to be going nowhere fast only two weeks ago when it lost the NBA leader in assists and triple doubles to a season-ending knee injury in the final game of a season-high six-game losing streak.

Instead, the Celtics have responded with a season-best seven consecutive victories - their longest since winning 14 straight in the 2010-11 season.

While four of the first six wins came against teams with losing records, Boston made a big statement on Sunday when it snapped Denver's nine-game win streak with a 118-114 triple-overtime victory.

"Lot of people still doubt us," said forward Jeff Green, who hit a 3-pointer to tie the game late in the first overtime. "Can't come into games thinking we have to impress people."

Paul Pierce had an impressive performance with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists - the first time in his 15-year career that he's had that many points, rebounds and assists in the same game.

Jason Terry added a season-high 26 points as the Celtics won despite shooting 39.8 percent from the floor.

With 20 points and 18 rebounds against the Nuggets, Kevin Garnett has averaged 18.6 and 9.8, respectively, in the last eight games.

Garnett, though, has had a tough time against Charlotte, averaging 13.5 points in his last 11 meetings. He had just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting in a 100-89 victory over the visiting Bobcats on Jan. 14.

The Celtics average 96.4 points with 23.4 assists per game on the season, but have scored 105.0 and handed out 25.6 assists in seven games without Rondo.

After having six of the seven wins come at home, Boston will try to keep it going on the road against a Charlotte team that has given up 103.4 points on 49.1 percent shooting in its last five games.

The Bobcats (11-39) have also sputtered offensively, shooting their second-lowest field goal percentage of the season (30.7) in an 87-76 loss at Philadelphia on Saturday.

"At this point, we just need to find ways to win," guard Gerald Henderson said.

Guard Ramon Sessions led the team with 20 points, while forward Byron Mullens contributed 16 on 7-of-19 shooting.

Mullens has averaged 18.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in two games since returning to the starting lineup.

Guard Kemba Walker will try to break out of his slump after finishing with six points while shooting 2-of-9 from the floor against the 76ers. Walker, the team's scoring leader at 17.3 points per game, has been held to 10.0 per contest on 34.1 percent shooting in his last four.

He's also struggled against the Celtics, averaging 9.0 points on 7-of-33 shooting in the last three meetings.

The Bobcats, who have lost 34 of 38, are averaging just 88.0 points - 6.1 below their season average - during their latest losing streak.

It doesn't figure to get any easier against Boston, which has limited opponents to 91.9 points per game during its tear.

The Celtics have won eight of the last 10 meetings in Charlotte and 10 of 12 in the series overall.

Mullens, Bobcats end Celtics' win streak 94-91

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) All in all, Monday proved to be a painful night for the Boston Celtics.

Not only did the Celtics have their seven-game losing streak snapped at the hands of the NBA's worst team, but they might have suffered yet another costly injury in their 94-91 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.

Backup guard Leandro Barbosa, who has seen increased playing time since the season-ending injury to Rajon Rondo, injured his left knee late in the third quarter and had to be carried to the locker room by a trainer and teammate.

Coach Doc Rivers said Barbosa will have an MRI on Tuesday.

"It doesn't look great but we'll see," Rivers said.

In the seven games since Rondo's injury Barbosa had averaged nine points while playing an average of 22.5 minutes. The Celtics had won all seven games.

All of that came crashing down Monday night.

This night belonged to Charlotte's unheralded big man, Byron Mullens.

The four-year NBA veteran turned in a career game with 25 points and 18 rebounds as the Bobcats snapped a seven-game losing streak.

The 7-foot Mullens hit 10 of 16 shots from the field, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Ramon Sessions had 19 points for the Bobcats, including the go-ahead jumper from 18 feet with 25.7 seconds left. Kemba Walker had 18 points, six assists and six rebounds, and Gerald Henderson chipped in with 16 points.

Mullens was playing his fifth game after missing 19 with an ankle injury.

"It's big time," Walker said of Mullens' effort. "We need that from him. We need that from Byron and he can do it. We know he can do it every night. He is very capable. When he has big games like that, you know, I think that gives us a much better chance."

Mullens said he was more pleased with his rebounding than his scoring "because that is not what I'm known for.

"I just have to show the league and this organization that I can rebound," he said.

Kevin Garnett had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Celtics, but missed a key 18-footer that would have given Boston the lead late in the game. Paul Pierce and Avery Bradley had chances to send the game into overtime in the final seconds, but missed open 3-pointers.

Jeff Green had 18 points for the Celtics and Pierce finished with 13 points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

"We had a win streak going and we had momentum going," Celtics guard Courtney Lee said. "We wanted finish out the rest of these games going into the (All-Star) break. So it's definitely a letdown. This one hurts more because we had the lead with one minute to go."

It was a back-and-forth game throughout.

After Henderson gave the Bobcats an 85-84 lead with 3:58 remaining, Jason Terry made a 3 from the wing and Garnett followed with a turnaround jumper in the lane to push the Boston lead to four.

It appeared as though the Bobcats were on their way to another fourth quarter collapse.

But trailing by four, Henderson hit a 3-point with 1:01 left. After Bradley missed an open jumper, Sessions came free off a screen and knocked down an 18-footer to give the Bobcats the lead with 25.7 seconds remaining.

The Celtics called timeout but Garnett missed from the left wing. Mullens grabbed his 18th rebound and the Walker made a pair of key free throws to give the Bobcats a three-point lead with 14.8 seconds left.

Boston set up an inbounds play and Pierce got an open look but missed. He grabbed his own rebound and dished out to the wing for Bradley, but he missed a 3 as time expired.

Boston's loss came after a triple overtime win against Denver on Thursday night, but the Celtics refused to use fatigue as an excuse.

"We put that one behind us," Green said.

As he'd planned to do before the game, Rivers went deep into his bench in the first half with 10 players seeing at least 10 minutes of action.

The Bobcats battled back in the third quarter behind 12 points from Mullens to take a 75-72 lead into the fourth. Mullens, who scored Charlotte's first 10 points of the game, did most of his damage from outside, knocking down 3-pointers and turnaround jumpers, showing great touch for a big man.

"Byron was as good as you can get in the NBA statistically in many ways," Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said. "He's still young. He's growing. ... He's a different player because he was able to take a res. He's got live legs and he's able to see the game."

NOTES: Pierce scored in double figures for the 50th game this season. ... Bobcats center Bismack Biyombo was a force inside on the defensive end blocking four shots and grabbing seven defensive rebounds.

THE FACTS: Byron Mullens had 25 points and 18 rebounds, and the Charlotte Bobcats rallied from a four-point deficit in the final two minutes to beat the Boston Celtics 94-91 on Monday night at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C.

Ramon Sessions added 19 points, including a 15-foot jumper with 26 seconds left that put the Bobcats (12-39) ahead to stay and end their seven-game losing streak.

Jeff Green had 18 points and Kevin Garnett added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Celtics (27-24), who saw their seven-game winning streak end with their first loss against Charlotte in the past five games -- dating back to the 2010-2011 season.

QUOTABLE: "This was a very good win for us, especially with the Celtics coming in with a very good win streak. For us to buckle down and come up with the win reminded me of the first 10 or 15 games of the season, when we were winning games that were decided by four or six points. We are just getting back to that. Hopefully we can keep it up."

THE STAT: While the Celtics led by as many as nine points during Monday night's game, they never could sustain the lead or put the game away -- a likely result of tired legs from Sunday's triple-overtime win over the Denver Nuggets. Likewise the Bobcats, who led by as many as five points in the third quarter. That led to a game with 13 lead changes and 11 ties.

TURNING POINT: Garnett's jumper with 2:12 remaining in the fourth quarter put the Celtics up 91-87. But Gerald Henderson, who finished with 16 points, hit a 3-pointer 71 seconds later to pull the Bobcats within a point. Sessions' jumper, wide open after Boston defender Avery Bradley slipped, then put Charlotte ahead. Kemba Walker, who had 18 points, then iced it with a pair of free throws with 14.8 seconds left.

QUOTABLE II: "The last six plays, what we needed was perfection and we got it. Kemba hit his free throws ... Ramon hits and Gerald's 3 gave us life. It was good to see the execution on both sides, not just on offense. Actually, the defense is what made the difference coming down the stretch."

HOT: Mullens had his best all-around game since returning from a last week 19-game absence for a severly sprained ankle. His 18 rebounds were a career high, bettering his 17-rebound effort against the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 18, 2012. His 25 points were two off his season best (27 points against the Washington Wizards on Nov. 24, 2012).

QUOTABLE III: "The last time out, I had just three rebounds. I think I made up for that tonight. ... the 18 rebounds, I'd rather have that than 25 points. That's [not] what I'm known for, [so] I want to show the league and our organization that I can rebound."

NOT: After Garnett's jumper, the Celtics missed their last six field goal attempts, including late 3-point attempts by Paul Pierce (13 points, eight assists) and Bradley (eight points), who had combined to go 1-for-6 on 3s Monday.

GOOD MOVE: Dunlap went with a defense-strong lineup of Mullens, Walker, Henderson, Jeffery Taylor and Bismack Biyombo in the final 25 seconds against the Celtics. The Bobcats' defense forced three of Boston's missed field goals, and came up with a pair of defensive rebounds.

QUOTABLE IV: "We took out time down the stretch, and played some good team defense. Defense is what wins games in this league. Down the stretch, we really just came together. We were in all the right spots, and we were talking. That's the biggest thing, communication. Down the stretch, that's when you need it the most."

NOTABLE: Celtics guard Leandro Barbosa went out of Monday's game late in the third quarter with an injured left knee. He went down during a battle under the Boston basket with less than 30 seconds left in the period, and had to be carried off the court by his teammates. His status for the Celtics' next game was unknown. "At this point, we really don't know what's going on," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "We think it's the knee, but he will travel back with us and do an MRI in the morning."
