A stunning performance by Kevin Durant caused Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle to call the Oklahoma City Thunder forward "the best shooter on the planet."

That's praise Russell Westbrook will likely never receive, but the point guard has been the Thunder's best shooter of late.

Durant and Westbrook will try to lead NBA-leading Oklahoma City to a seventh consecutive win and second over Denver in five days Sunday.

Named an All-Star starter the day before, Durant scored a career-high 52 points in a 117-114 overtime win over Dallas on Friday. He went 13 of 31 from the field, 5 of 9 from 3-point range and hit all 21 of his free throws.

Durant's previous high was 51 points in a 124-118 OT victory over Denver on Feb. 19. He's averaged 37.6 points and 52.9 percent shooting in the last five contests.

"It's more about the win for me," Durant said. "I was excited at the way we played ... We just kept fighting and we got a good win on the road."

The Thunder (32-8) have won four in a row away from home as they open a season-high six-game trip. They may have a good chance to extend that run with another big game from Durant along with one from Westbrook, who's shot 54.3 percent from the field while scoring 31 or more in each of the last three games.

Westbrook had 16 of his 32 points in the first quarter of a 117-97 home win over Denver (24-18) on Wednesday. Durant and Kevin Martin finished with 20 apiece to help the Thunder win for the sixth time in eight matchups with their Northwest Division rival.

The Nuggets figured they would rebound after Oklahoma City ended their six-game win streak, but they limp into this contest following a 112-108 loss to league-worst Washington on Friday.

Opening a stretch of eight of nine at Denver, the Nuggets fell for just the third time in 18 home games.

"Our defense never responded, our big men never responded and the personality of the game is very similar to (games against) Minnesota, Orlando, Cleveland, and Golden State (earlier this month)," coach George Karl said. "All those games had similar personalities of not having enough effort, not having enough serious basketball."

The Nuggets are among the league leaders in rebounds with 45.6 per game, but they were outrebounded by 11 against the Wizards.

Oklahoma City had 53 boards Friday with Serge Ibaka grabbing 14, including seven of the team's season high-tying 18 on the offensive end. Ibaka had five points, six rebounds and five blocks Wednesday after missing the previous two games with a chest contusion.

"He's going to continue to keep getting rebounds and keeping balls alive for us on the offensive glass," Durant told the Thunder's official website.

The Nuggets need that from rebounding leader Kenneth Faried, who has seen his average drop to 9.9 with eight total in the last two games.

Denver has 38 assists and 35 turnovers in those contests, with Ty Lawson giving the ball away a team-high nine times.

"We're definitely disappointed," Lawson told the Nuggets' official website Friday after scoring 27 of his 29 points after halftime. "... We have a film session to figure out the things we're doing wrong. Hopefully we have a good showing against OKC on Sunday."

Nuggets snap Thunder's win streak with OT victory

DENVER (AP) Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook teamed up on another scoring spree for Oklahoma City. In a tightly contested game, though, Kenneth Faried's driving layup made the difference for Denver.

Faried scored the go-ahead layup in overtime, and the Nuggets overcame 30-plus point performances from Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook to beat the Thunder 121-118 Sunday night, snapping Oklahoma City's six-game winning streak.

Corey Brewer scored 26 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Nuggets, who reversed a 20-point loss to the Thunder last Wednesday. Danilo Gallinari added 18 points and Faried finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Brewer also set up Faried with a pass on his decisive drive to the basket.

"He gave me the ball and said, `Go to work,"' Faried said. "They weren't going to come double me, and I said `I'm going to score on this.' There were no ifs, ands or buts about it. I was going to score."

Faried's driving layup gave the Nuggets a one-point lead they would not relinquish with 46.5 seconds remaining in overtime.

"He made a big-time play," said Nuggets guard Ty Lawson, who finished with 11 points and nine assists. "He took two dribbles, and the little jump-hook he'd been working on, he hit."

The Thunder, who beat Dallas in overtime Friday night behind a career-high 52 points from Durant, lost for the first time in five overtime games this season. They got 37 points from Durant and 36 from Westbrook.

"They're great players," Faried said. "That's what they're going to do. We've just got to neutralize the players around them, because once they really get involved, then here come the blowouts and the tough losses."

Westbrook said the Nuggets deserved credit for their play.

"I think they did a good job coming in playing aggressive," he said. "I think we were just a step late. They made some open 3s, but we still had a chance to win."

The game was a difficult one emotionally as well for Thunder coach Scott Brooks, whose 79-year-old mother, Lee, died on Saturday. In a statement released by the club earlier, Brooks thanked friends, family and the team for their support and said his mom would have wanted him to coach Sunday night's game.

"I do so to honor her memory and all that she meant to me as a mother and as an invaluable role model," he said.

The Nuggets took a 101-90 lead after Lawson scored on a putback with 6:40 remaining. But the Thunder managed to pull to 103-96 after Durant made a 3-pointer with 4:17 left to play.

Andre Miller answered with a layup and Brewer made a pair of free throws to rebuild the Nuggets' lead to 107-96 with 3:04 remaining.

Oklahoma responded with a stunning 10-0 run culminating in successive 3-pointers by Durant and Kevin Martin, pulling to within 107-106 with 1:26 left to play.

After Gallinari made two free throws, Westbrook, playing the second half on a tender left ankle he injured earlier in the game, hit a 3-pointer to even the score at 109-all with 22.9 seconds remaining.

Maneuvering for a last-second shot, Lawson failed to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded ending regulation, and the game went into overtime.

After Durant, who made 20 of 21 from the free throw line, missed a long jumper, Faried missed two free throws with 10.6 seconds left. As the Thunder were going for the go-ahead shot, Nick Collison was called for an illegal screen, turning the ball over to the Nuggets.

The Thunder quickly fouled Miller, and he made both free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining. The Nuggets then fouled Durant, who made both free throws to pull the Thunder to within a point with 4.9 seconds left.

On the inbounds, the Thunder fouled Wilson Chandler, who made both free throws with 4.5 seconds left to give the Nuggets a three-point cushion. Durant tried for a tying 3-pointer at the final buzzer but it rimmed out.

"I think we gave ourselves a chance to win by going into overtime. We just couldn't finish," Durant said. "I missed a free throw, a jump shot. I can't do that."

Down by a point at the break, the Thunder got a boost when Durant hit his first 3-pointer of the game and Serge Ibaka followed with a basket to give Oklahoma City a 64-61 lead midway through the third quarter. The Nuggets scored the next seven points, starting with a 3-pointer by Gallinari and the game stayed tight with Denver taking an 81-79 lead into the fourth quarter after Corey Brewer made 1 of 2 free throws with .04 seconds remaining in the third.

The third quarter was marked by some chippy play on both sides. Kendrick Perkins was called for a flagrant foul when he swung an elbow that caught Faried in the head as they fought for a rebound.

Denver assistant John Welch was called for a technical for his protests from the bench on a goal-tending call against JaVale McGee, which resulted in a basket for Durant.

The teams were tied at 25-all after the first quarter and Denver nudged in front 51-50 at the half when Lawson made one of two free throws near the end of the second quarter.

NOTES: A missed free throw by Durant with 1:44 to go in OT ended his streak of 50 consecutive free throws. ... The Nuggets improved to 3-0 in overtime games this season. ... Oklahoma City is now 1-1 on its season-high six-game road trip that continues Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers. ... Durant scored 30 or more points in a career-best fourth consecutive game. ... The Thunder are 20-5 this season when Westbrook and Durant each score at least 20 points. ... The Nuggets avoided a third consecutive loss, which would have matched a season high. ... Denver coach George Karl moved past Larry Brown into sixth place on the all-time win list with 1,099.

THE FACTS: Kenneth Faried's layup with 46 seconds left put Denver up for good and the Nuggets hit four free throws down the stretch to hold off the Oklahoma City Thunder 121-118 in overtime on Sunday night.

Corey Brewer scored 26 off the bench -- 15 in the fourth quarter -- and Danilo Gallinari had 18 for the Nuggets (25-18), who snapped a two-game skid.

Kevin Durant scored a game-high 37 points and Russell Westbrook added 36 but both missed potential game-tying 3-pointers in the final seconds of overtime. Oklahoma City (32-9) had won six straight.

Thunder coach Scott Brooks led his team despite the death of his mother, Lee Brooks, on Saturday night. His team almost pulled out a win after trailing by 11 late in the fourth quarter.

Westbrook sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer to tie it at 109 with 22.9 seconds left in regulation.

QUOTABLE: "It's the best basketball game I've seen this year. Both teams going after each other and both of them were pretty good tonight. We overcome some situations and circumstances that were difficult. When you give up 50 free throws and still win it means you're doing a lot of good stuff. It makes us feel like we can be a good basketball team."

THE STAT: Westbrook and Durant combined to make 35 of their 38 free throws for the Thunder. Oklahoma City was 40-for-48 from the line, overall.

TURNING POINT: Trailing by one in the final minute of overtime the Nuggets went to Faried. With the shorter Kevin Martin guarding him in the post Faried hit a layup to put Denver ahead 117-116. Durant missed a 3-pointer and the Nuggets held on with four free throws down the stretch.

QUOTABLE II: "I had all the confidence it was going in. Corey [Brewer] knew who I had on me and he gave me the ball and said 'Go to work.' They didn't double me and I knew I was going to score it."

HOT: Brewer was on fire early in the fourth period. He hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the first 4:18 of the period to help Denver grab a 101-90 lead.

QUOTABLE III: "They don't run many plays for him, he just figures out how to get open. He made 3s. Seemed like every time we made a minor mistake he was around the basketball."

NOT: Westbrook suffered a left leg injury in the final seconds of the second quarter when teammate Serge Ibaka landed on it. Although he played the entire second half, including overtime, he was limited off the dribble.

QUOTABLE IV: "I played through it because I was trying to win. This was a big game for us."

NOT II: The Thunder bench, other than Martin. Martin had 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting. The rest of the reserves went 0-for-2 and didn't score a point. Denver's bench outscored the Thunder's 57-18.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Nuggets guard Julyan Stone gave a short speech honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in advance of the holiday honoring the late civil rights leader.

GOOD MOVE: Karl decided to go with Brewer and Andre Miller on Durant and Westbrook for most of the fourth quarter. While they made shots both had to work for them.

BAD MOVE: The third quarter was filled with technicals. First, Kendrick Perkins was called for a Flagrant 1 foul with 3:29 left when his left elbow and connected with Faried's head after Perkins grabbed a rebound. Two minutes later JaVale McGee was called for one after Martin hit a 3-pointer, giving the Thunder a four-point play. The last was on Karl for arguing a goaltending call.

NOTABLE: The win was the 1,099th of Karl's career. He is now sixth on the all-time NBA wins list, passing good friend Larry Brown. Up next is Phil Jackson at 1,146. ... Westbrook has scored 30 or more points in four straight games. ... Durant made his first 18 free throws to increase his total to 50 before a miss in the fourth quarter.
