The Orlando Magic posted disappointing results over the season's first full month but have significantly picked up the pace in December.

The slumping Utah Jazz, in contrast, haven't been able to get much going of late.

The Magic continue a five-game road trip seeking a season-best third consecutive win Wednesday night against the Jazz, who try to avoid matching their longest skid from 2011-12.

Orlando (7-10) managed just 88.5 points per game in dropping 10 of 13 to conclude November but has since found a groove. The Magic - in their first matchup against the former face of the franchise - got the best of Dwight Howard in Sunday's 113-103 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, then beat Golden State 102-94 one night later.

Arron Afflalo and Glen Davis both had 24 points while J.J. Redick scored 22 off the bench for Orlando, which compiled 23 points off the Warriors' 14 turnovers and outscored them 48-36 in the paint.

"It was a great win for us. For the most part, I think we played as hard and with as much energy as we did (Sunday) night, which is saying a lot," said Redick, who went 4 for 6 from 3-point range against Golden State. "(Sunday) night was an emotional night, (tonight's) a back-to-back, there was a natural tendency to let down, so it really says a lot about our group."

Orlando now looks to carry some momentum over to Wednesday against Utah (9-10), which has taken three straight in this series by an average of 10.7 points.

The Jazz, though, could be hard-pressed to extend that run if their recent results are any indication. Utah has given up 111.7 points per contest while allowing teams to shoot 51.4 percent during a three-game losing streak.

The Jazz led by as many as 14 points late in the third quarter Monday against the Clippers before surrendering 32 in the fourth of a 105-104 defeat. Utah, which dropped to 6-1 at home, has gone 6-26 since the start of last season when allowing at least 103 points.

"It all starts defensively for us," said Gordon Hayward, who scored 17 points off the bench Monday. "That's how it's been all season for us, we gotta be better."

The Jazz surely can't afford to come out with another sloppy display, either. Utah's 17 turnovers led to 25 points for the Clippers.

"You gotta take care of the ball, can't give them any easy ones, especially at home, you just gotta be better than that," Hayward added. "Hopefully (when) we come out next game, we will."

Mo Williams had 20 points and 12 assists Monday for the Jazz, who continue to play without Marvin Williams (concussion-like symptoms) and Derrick Favors (plantar fasciitis). Both players are unlikely to suit up against the Magic.

Favors' absence could help Orlando's Nikola Vucevic continue his impressive play down low. The 7-foot Switzerland native has combined for 31 points, 27 rebounds and six blocks in the two December games after averaging 6.8 points in his previous six.

"I don't think I was really playing that bad, I just think offensively I wasn't as aggressive," Vucevic said. "I knew at one point I had to come back and turn it around and just keep believing in myself. ... I'm more aggressive now and it's shown."

In addition to keeping Vucevic involved, the Magic may want to get Redick more looks. Orlando is 7-3 when he has at least 11 points and 0-6 when he scores 10 or fewer.

Jefferson scores 31 to lift Jazz over Magic 87-81

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Al Jefferson had trouble sitting down and putting on his socks. He needed a trainer to help with his shoes and shirt.

But the Utah Jazz big man could still crack jokes through the pain of back spasms after scoring a season-high 31 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in an 87-81 victory Wednesday night over the Orlando Magic.

"That's the reason I bought the $25,000 bed," Jefferson said of the 10-foot wide, 12-foot long custom job he ordered this summer after he experienced similar back pain. "It was worth every dime. That's why I can't wait to get home and get in it right now."

Whatever works for Big Al.

Just about everything did Wednesday night until he corralled his final rebound with 1:29 remaining and the Jazz leading 85-81. Jefferson grabbed at his back under the basket, took a few steps, then hit the floor in obvious pain and finally had to be helped off.

"I'm glad he didn't crumble 2-3 minutes earlier or we would have been in trouble," teammate Randy Foye said.

Jefferson had just eight points at halftime but scored 17 in the third quarter and was the difference down the stretch as the Jazz held off a furious Orlando comeback attempt.

Orlando trailed by 14 in the first half and by 11 entering the fourth but took a 79-78 lead on Glen Davis' powerful jam. Foye's 3-pointer and back-to-back jumpers by Jefferson right before his injury sealed the win for Utah.

"That's why I get paid the big bucks," Jefferson said. "They expect me to go out there and lead the team, nothing less."

Magic coach Jacque Vaughn had plenty of praise for Jefferson.

"Al stays within himself," said Vaughn, who spent the first four years of his playing career in a Jazz uniform. "He knows his game and he makes jump shots, which makes his post game even more difficult to guard. ... When you get a guy like him rolling, he is tough to stop."

Davis led Orlando with 18 points. Jameer Nelson had 17 and Arron Afflalo added 16.

Paul Millsap scored 22 points for Utah, including 16 in the first half when the Jazz led by as many as 14.

The Magic managed only 15 points in the first quarter and 34 in the first half, but fought back behind Davis.

His three-point play pulled Orlando to 76-72 with 5:41 remaining and J.J. Redick's three-point play off a driving layup with 4:20 left had the Magic within 78-77. Davis' powerful dunk over two defenders gave Orlando a 79-78 lead with 3:33 left.

Foye, who started 0 for 6, countered with a 3-pointer to put the Jazz back on top 81-79 with 3:11 remaining. Jefferson then hit back-to-back jumpers to seal the win, finishing 13 of 20 from the field with two assists and a steal.

"I felt bad, missing all those shots when I had clear looks," Foye said. "(The last one) made up for it."

Orlando fought back in the third behind Redick, pulling to 56-53. But Utah closed the quarter on a 12-4 run to lead 68-57, with Jazz reserves providing the spark defensively. DeMarre Carroll had a pair of steals and helped force a backcourt violation. Jefferson was Utah's offense with a 17-point quarter on 6-of-9 shooting

"Tonight the shots were falling and, of course, we didn't want to (lose) four games in a row," Jefferson said. "No disrespect to Orlando, but they're the type of team you can attack on the inside."

Utah held a 30-14 edge on points in the paint in the first half while holding the Magic to 36 percent shooting and forcing a dozen turnovers in stopping Orlando's winning streak at two.

"We did a great job of sharing the basketball tonight," Millsap said when asked about not losing another heartbreaker after building a big lead. "That was the key. ... We're a little banged up and that's what makes this game even more amazing."

Jefferson, despite difficulty dressing himself, vowed to be ready to go Friday night against Toronto.

Of course he had some medicine in hand, and the huge bed awaiting, explaining that it cost an extra $10,000 to have it done quickly rather than six to eight weeks.

"I don't miss games," Jefferson said. "I'll be ready to play unless I just can't walk."

NOTES: Clippers guard Chauncey Billups received a warning from the NBA on Wednesday about flopping for a call late in Monday's game against the Jazz when he kicked out his feet on a 3-pointer and drew a foul from Mo Williams. Billups sank two of three free throws with 1:14 left in an eventual one-point Jazz loss. "It does us a lot of good now, the game's over," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "I thought we might have been right; we were right." ... Vaughn was drafted in the first round (No. 27) by the Jazz in 1997 and played in 224 games for Utah. ... Jazz shot-blocking specialist Derrick Favors missed his third straight game because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. ... Jazz swingman Gordon Hayward went 0 for 6. ... Jazz F Marvin Williams returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous three games with concussion-like symptoms. He finished with eight points.

THE FACTS: Carrying the Utah Jazz may have been too taxing for center Al Jefferson on Wednesday night.

Jefferson had 31 points and 15 rebounds before leaving with a back injury with 1:29 left in Utah's 87-81 win over the Orlando Magic. Jefferson landed awkwardly after grabbing a rebound and had to be helped off the court. He suffered back spasms and was in noticeable pain in the locker room following the contest. His status is listed as day-to-day.

Paul Millsap scored 22 points for the Jazz, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Jefferson and Millsap were the only players to score in double figures on a cold shooting night for Utah.

Glen Davis had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Jameer Nelson had 17 points and five assists for the scrappy Magic.

THE STAT: The Magic have led the NBA in 3-pointers made and attempted the last three seasons. They had the attempted part down pat against the Jazz. The made→ Not so much. Orlando was dismal from downtown, shooting 1-for-15 from 3-point range.

TURNING POINT: After Orlando overcame what had been a 14-point deficit and took a 79-78 lead with 3:33 remaining, the Jazz got serious. Randy Foye drained a 3-pointer (his only basket of the night) 22 seconds later, and Utah outscored the Magic 9-2 the rest of the way. Jefferson made back-to-back baskets and Gordon Hayward sank two free throws (his only points of the night) to close the scoring. Two free throws by Nelson is all Orlando produced after taking its 79-78 lead on a basket by Davis.

HOT: Jefferson was at his best when it counted as he made his final five shots and shot 9-for-12 in the second half. Millsap went through a stretch of shooting less than 50 percent in nine of 10 games, but has now shot better than 50 percent in two consecutive games. He was 8-for-14 against Orlando. Nelson and Davis were both solid in the second half after a slow start. Nelson shot 5-for-7 after halftime and scored 12 of his 17 points. Davis scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half.

NOT: Hayward and Foye couldn't buy baskets until they contributed down the stretch. Foye missed his first six shots. Hayward shot for 0-for-6 and embarrassingly missed two dunks. After a couple of games of scoring in double figures, Orlando's Nikola Vucevic shot 3-for-9 and scored six points. Vucevic, however, did collect 16 rebounds.

QUOTABLE II: "It just shows hw important it is to play the whole game and how we can't have little errors like turnovers. I turned the ball over a lot today. We were in the ball game, in spite of 20 turnovers. I commend our team just for fighting and fighting back."

GOOD MOVE: The Jazz nearly blew a double-digit lead at home for the second straight game. Utah, however, perhaps learned something from its loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night. The Jazz kept their poise in the final minutes against the Magic, and got back to executing their offense and getting good shots after Orlando briefly took the lead. Utah also played its best defense of the game in the closing minutes.

BAD MOVE: The Magic were just too sloppy with the ball to earn an upset victory on the road. They committed 20 turnovers, and the team's young roster can't be entirely blamed for the carelessness. Trailing by one with 4:21 left in the game, Orlando blew a chance to take its first lead since 2-1 when Nelson and Arron Afflalo had a two-on-one fast-break, but lost the ball out of bounds, turning it over.

NOTABLE: The Jazz held the Magic to 34 first-half points, a season-low for a Utah opponent this season. Afflalo had 16 points and J.J. Redick had 14 points off the bench for Orlando. Marvin Williams returned to the lineup for Utah after missing three games with concussion-like symptoms. He had eight points and four rebounds in 23 minutes. The Jazz have defeated the Magic four straight times. DeMarre Carroll tied a career-high with three steals.
