Boston Celtics Team Overview

2011-12 record: 39-27

First place, Atlantic Division

Lost in Eastern conference finals to Miami

DRAFT PICKS:

Round: 1

#22 Fab Melo

Round: 2

Areas of Strength:
Defense and experience. Even if Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett leave after five seasons in green, the Celtics still have two stars -- Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo -- that have been part of an elite defensive squad for quite some time. They'll also have defensive bulldog Avery Bradley, who quickly developed into a key part of their future, in the backcourt with Rondo. And with Doc Rivers on the bench, the Celtics will make the most of whatever they have.

Needs work:
Scoring and rebounding. As terrific as they were defensively last season, the Celtics had a tough time putting the ball in the basket. They ranked 24th in offensive efficiency, relying too much on jump shots and not getting to the free throw line nearly enough. They were the worst offensive rebounding team in the league and weren't much better on the glass defensively.

Two stats that matter:
7.7 --
The Celtics outscored their opponents by 7.7 points per 100 possessions with Garnett on the floor, and were outscored by 2.6 with Garnett on the bench.

47.3% -- The Celtics grabbed just 47.3 percent of available rebounds. Only the Bobcats (46.4 percent) and Warriors (46.1 percent) were worse.

The way to go:
With Rondo and Bradley, the Celtics' backcourt is set. But they need as much help as they can get on the frontline. There should be some talent and size in the late first round, but Danny Ainge might want to explore any opportunities to package his two picks to get more of an impact player than what they can find at 21 or 22.
